In the 1980s and early '90s it was almost impossible to get away from lo-fi, indie troubadours committed to a minimalist, D.I.Y.-noise approach, and by the early 2000s, an age saturated with overproduced "alternative" bands, that style came off sounding as vital as ever. Of course, Mecca Normal, a duo comprising vocalist Jean Smith and guitarist David Lester, have been purveyors of the sound since the early '80s, and their 2006 release, THE OBSERVER, holds to their simple, powerful aesthetic. Steadfastly indie, Mecca Normal mix pop, rock, and a genuine punk spirit on this album about the ups and downs of dating. The result is an appealingly idiosyncratic effort as strong as any in their discography.

| | Kiss: The Box Set (Standard) CDs (2001) Standard
Observer album
$47.59 The long-rumored and oft-delayed Kiss boxset finally saw the light of day in November of 2001, imaginatively dubbed THE BOX SET. But don't be misled by its run-of-the-mill title, like everything Kiss has ever done, it's completely over the top. Featuring five discs full of hits, overlooked album tracks, and rarities. The set comes in two configurations-- a standard issue box set, and a far more expensive deluxe edition, which comes in a replica guitar case. (Both come with a 120 page book with track-by-track commentary and rare photos).
Kiss detractors who've never been able to get past the greasepaint, costumes, and bombastic live show should note that the band has penned countless hard rock classics over the years, all of which are here; "Black Diamond," "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Do You Love Me," "Detroit Rock City," "I Love It Loud," and countless others. But the main attraction for longtime fans is the set's abundance of rarities, including demos of "Strutter," "Deuce," "Firehouse," "God of Thunder" (with Paul Stanley on vocals), and "Love Gun." There are also tracks that never saw the li

$11.79 A-Ha keep on right on ticking via LIFELINES, an album which proves the "Take on Me" trio were no one-hit wonder.
A difference from their last effort yet undeniably a-ha. This time, the Norse purveyors of quality pop have opted for a variety of producers, ranging from Stephen Hague to Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. The album begins with a lush ballad -- which is typical a-ha, pastoral with support orchestration -- almost like a modern day Moody Blues. "You Wanted More" also follows this trait, only darker with spiky electronics. "Afternoon High" sketches out '70s pastel glory similar to what Tears for Fears were getting ...
| | Alanis Morissette So-Called Chaos CD (2004)
Observer music CDs
$15.65 Alanis Morissette crashed into pop music's collective consciousness in the mid-1990s as a woman scorned, carrying loads of resentment along with her alt-pop leanings. Morissette's fourth studio album, SO-CALLED CHAOS, reveals that she has come a long way from the days of "You Oughta Know," thanks, in part, to the healing powers of love. ...
