Bands like Air helped carve a niche for "retro yet futuristic" synth/keyboard outfits. And while SSM use keys as a major ingredient for their sound, they replace the ethereal Moog with organ and '60s garage rock production, as evidenced by their 2006 self-titled debut. Comprised of singer/keyboardist John Szymanski, drummer Dave Shettler, and singer/guitarist Mary Morris, all of SSM's members are veterans of the local Detroit rock scene (having played with such local outfits as the Hentchmen, the Sights, and the Cyril Lords). Like most garage rock revivalists of the early 21st century, SSM aren't afraid to test how sturdily built their instruments are -- many of their songs contain "bash away" moments. Blaring retro organ that brings to mind ? & the Mysterians on such cuts as "Exit Strategy" and "Candy Loving," the band takes a new wave-ish detour on "Put Me In," and if Suicide's two-man lineup was expanded to include a guitarist, it would probably sound close to "Ain't Love." With many of their garage rock compadres being more concerned with looking the part -- SSM deliver musically on their self-titled outing. ~ Greg Prato SSM Review

$14.30 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between ...

| | Eurythmics Peace CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
SSM music CDs
$8.49 After releasing 1989's WE TOO ARE ONE, Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox took a break from Eurythmics in order to pursue outside projects. During their time apart in the '90s, Lennox released two solo albums while Stewart wrote songs and produced other people, composed scores, and fronted the Spiritual Cowboys. On their first record in a decade, Eurythmics return with a collection of lush pop tracks caressed by Annie Lennox's sultry vocals flowing over Dave Stewart's enthralling studio arrangements.
The mood struck on the Eurythmics' ninth studio album is one of warm, organic ambiance akin to William Orbit's work with Madonna. Songs such as the airy "17 Again" (which finds Lennox cleverly referencing their hit "Sweet Dreams") and the Burt Bacharach-flavored "I Saved the World Today" are sophisticated, unpretentious pop compositions light years beyond the band's early synth-pop work. Balancing out PEACE's sedate moments are such up-tempo tracks as the wah-wah guitar-driven "Power to the Meek" and the equally rocking "I Want It All," a track punctuated by Lennox's exuberant whoops. One of the most triumphant moments on PEACE is "Forever," a sweeping number wrapped in a George Martin-inspired orchestral arrangement straight off a late-period Beatles album.
Nearly a decade after Eurythmics went on an unannounced, virtually unnoticed hiatus in 1990, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart returned with the heavily publicized Peace. Both Lennox and Stewart had been silent since 1995, which means that reuniting really wasn't a sacrifice, since their solo careers had stalled. In fact, it was a wise idea to re-team, both commercially and artistically, since their best and most popular music was made together. What's odd is that Peace strongly resembles Lennox's Diva. True, Eurythmics were moving toward the melodramatic grandeur of Diva on their final '80s album, We Too Are One, yet they still had an innate sense of quirkiness and a desire to take risks. In 1999, they're more about craft, which only emphasizes the maturity of the music. That's not entirely a bad thing, even if it means that Peace needs a couple of spins before the songs begin to register. Lennox and Stewart know how to write gently insinuating melodies and how to layer their tracks with small sonic details, weaving lush tapestries of sound. Peace ...
| | United States Marine Band Three Hit Albums From The U.S. Military Bands CDs (1963)
SSM songs
$15.29 This double-disc anthology gathers three of the four U.S. Armed Forces Band long-players originally issued by RCA Victor in 1963. The project was unprecedented as the U.S. Department of Defense commissioned each military branch to record approximately a half-hour of their best-known and most beloved marches and patriotic melodies to raise funds for the National Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. Shortly after these platters were released, the venue was rechristened the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in honor of the President's passing in November of 1963. The United States Marine Band's full ensemble commences with "Marine's Hymn," which is often referred to by the opening lines "From the halls of Montezuma/To the shores of Tripoli." Additional selections of note are "Semper Fidelis" -- a John Philip Sousa adaptation from the Marine Corp motto "Always Faithful" -- "Stars and Stripes Forever," "America the Beautiful," "March of the Women Marines," "Chimes of Liberty," and "American Patrol." The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Presents the United States ...
