| | Joe Haider Mysterious CD Joe Haider Discography of CDs
Personnel: Joe Haider (piano); Thomi Geiger (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Daniel "Booxy" Aebi (drums). Liner Note Author: Tom Gsteiger. Recording information: Radiostudio Zurich (10/17/2005/10/18/2005). Photographer: PeeWee Windmüller. Arrangers: Joe Haider; Brigitte Dietrich. Pianist Joe Haider leads a "double quartet" on this continually intriguing release. His quartet, which features the fine tenor and soprano saxophonist Thomi Geiger, is joined by the Modern String Quartet for eight originals, five by the pianist. The music is sometimes third stream and hints at modern classical music, but on other occasions is swinging jazz or a ballad with strings. The variety, the high musicianship of the players (which in spots has the strings improvising and even soloing), and the diverse moods keep this set quite stimulating. Although the European musicians are not particularly well known in the United States, jazz fans are well advised to explore this excellent set of fresh and colorful music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Entombed Clandestine CD (1995)
Mysterious
$12.75 Legendary Swedish death metal trendsetters Entombed took their monstrous metal to the next plateau with their landmark second album, CLANDESTINE. Made during a crucial period for the still-gestating international death scene, CLANDESTINE let further rock-&-roll swing and swagger creep into their bludgeoning sound. Though not yet the signature style that would be labeled "death and roll," the songs here retain much of their debut LEFT HAND PATH's hasty tempos and spine-tingling dual guitars. "Crawl" combines menacing, macabre leads with maximum-strength riffs, and "Stranger Aeons" slams a spiked fist through already tattered speakers. Drummer Nicke Andersson steps up to the microphone for the first time on CLANDESTINE, and his gruff, hell-scarred voice is a perfect fit for the rolling thunder of the music. Positively wicked and as deep, dark, and ferocious as a wolf's pupils, CLANDESTINE is an important step in a death metal institution's gruesome evolution. Entombed's second album, Clandestine, is cut from the same cloth as its predecessor, the epochal Left Hand Path (1990). Released during the formative period of death metal -- that is, the early '90s, when American bands like Obituary, British bands like Carcass, and Swedish bands like Entombed were all flourishing creatively thanks to supportive labels like Earache and a multiplying ...
