Metal & Hair album
$8.99 Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya's screamed vocals. 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn't uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band's shows. But 1988's SOUTH OF HEAVEN alienated many of Slayer's punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl.
1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS follows its predecessor's formula. The album was embraced by metal-heads everywhere, eventually earning Slayer its first gold-certified record. The furious opening "War Ensemble" is a throwback to Slayer's earlier speed metal direction, while the album-closing title track is a murky, swarming chunk of metal. Other standouts include the chilling "Dead Skin Mask," which dealt lyrically ...

Metal & Hair album
$21.59 In early 1999, Sleater-Kinney issued this three-song CD single just prior to the release of The Hot Rock. And as that album's most atypical-sounding track, "Get Up" is perhaps the most surprising choice for the album's sole single. Which doesn't mean it's an ill-made decision -- the song is excellent -- but anyone familiar with the trio would probably find that song (which, at times, sounds uncomfortably similar to Sonic Youth's "Tunic") to be unrepresentative of the album as a whole. The single's two additional tracks, the otherwise ...

Metal & Hair music CDs
$7.65 TIEMPOS won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
"Tiempos" was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Record Of The Year.
TIEMPOS stands as one of Blades' most urbane, elegant works. The earthy folkloric meets urban smooth in this colorful summit of violins, saxophone, percussion, and nylon-string guitar with Blades singing his way through all-original Pan-Latino songs. The stylistic landscape stretches from hot New York salsa to traditional Argentine rhythmic gestures, and the tasteful arrangements manage to tie it all together seamlessly.
The instrumental "Mar Del Sur" opens with the refreshing, maritime strains of Ricardo Ramirez' violin and Gerardo Rojas on soprano saxophone. It's a dynamic piece that ebbs back and forth between an easy, rolling beat and grand, open spaces with no rhythm section. "Vida" is a lovely salsa cut featuring Blades' typically acute topical lyrics. Its softly-delivered chorus ("Dream of a different world!") is a welcome touch among the verses about self-determination and society's sometimes arbitrary assignment of privilege.
