Although Family never received commercial success, their standing as a premier late 60s prog rock band is still considerable. Their blistering live shows revolved around the manic Roger Chapman, who in addition to pelting the audience with tambourines, had the most incredible vibrato and vocal range. FEARLESS maintained the quality songs that Chapman and Charlie Whitney had developed over the previous four albums, and all were sung with passion and subtle humour. The odd man out here is the beautiful "Larf And Sing," written by violinist Polly Palmer. Family's worthy catalogue has been sensitively remastered by Castle, and this is an album of hidden depth and character.

Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics.
