| | Anthrax Among The Living CDs (1987) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Croissants
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.
The members of Anthrax were a bunch of comic-book-reading, jam-wearing ...

| | Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost CD (2009)
Croissants
$11.39 If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't ...

| | Bob Brozman Blue Hula Stomp CD (1981)
Croissants
$12.35 There's little doubt that Bob Brozman's a virtuoso on all plucked string instruments, but his specialty is the National Resophonic guitar, and he can make that do anything, as he shows on this collection, which, like much of his work, has a decidedly Hawaiian lilt. The bulk of the material on Blue Hula Stomp dates from the 1920s and '30s, rejigged in his own idiosyncratic style, whether it's the unusual, bluesy "Do You Call That a Buddy?" or the lightning fast hula, "Hano Hano Hanalei." He's not just someone who can play with remarkable speed and precision, as he does on "Chili Blues," but also with moving expression, as on the 1916 "hesitation" waltz, "Paauau Waltz," a tune that demands a lot of the player, but which Brozman pulls off with moving panache. Perhaps the most unusual, however, is "Ukulele Spaghetti," played on a National ukulele, the kind of piece to make every guitarist -- and uke ...
| | Quisqueya En El Hudson Dominican Music In New York City CD (2004)
Croissants
$13.89 The Dominican community in the New York area is the biggest outside the Caribbean, and its musical traditions are a big part of its vibrancy. Its annual festival in Washington Heights features Dominican music, and some of the artists who perform at the festival appear here, covering not only the native high-energy meringue, but every aspect of Dominican music, be it the palos of Conjunto Folklorico de Alianza Dominicana or the son of Coco Merenson. A lot of this music is folkloric, as befits the Smithsonian Folkways label, but it's never less than marvelously entertaining, like the salve of Francia Reyes, where the vocals rise effortlessly above the drums. "La Multona," from Neri Olivares, features a scintillating, delicate play of melody, showing how Dominicans ...
