| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Mystical Fish CD music
$13.89 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean ...
| | Laura Pausini Io Canto CD (2006)
Mystical Fish music CDs
$7.55 Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in a manner similar to that of Resta in Ascolto: the songs are heavily produced, layered with guitar, bass, and drums in addition to strings and synthesizers, and the performances are quite dramatic, often soaring to intense heights during the choruses, complemented by lyrics that are moody and poetic. $12.09 The Pete Fountain-inspired clarinetist Tim Laughlin and multi-reedist Tom Fischer (tripling on clarinet, soprano and alto) from Banu Gibson's band team up on this exuberant Dixieland set. With fine support from John Royen (an excellent stride pianist), rhythm guitarist Hank Mackie, bassist Al Bernard and drummer Hal Smith (who takes a few decent vocals), the two reeds are in excellent form. The ...

| | Barry Bacon Bacon CD (2007)
Mystical Fish CD music
$25.35 Barry Bacon grew up in rural northern Minnesota, the son of middle-class parents of four boys and one girl. His family ties were bound strongly, and his home was filled with music played by his dad on his guitar. Barry learned to play guitar at an early age and sang in various school and church musical groups. As a young adult, he began writing songs to express his deep feelings, both personal and spiritual. In 1979, he married Shelley Dickinson, and went on to medical school one year later. As children joined their family, two by birth and two by adoption, and as the children grew into individuals, both their joys and sorrow multiplied. As is often the case with those of strong intellect but private personalities, Barry turned to his music to sort through personal ...
| | Mojave Collective Rust & Dust CD (2008) (Import)
Mystical Fish music CDs
$14.29 Packing 21 grams of Parsons and a dusting of the Flying Burrito Brothers, Mark, Tom, Chris, Jaymie, James and \"Squeaky\" Pete come strolling into town like the Fabulous Furry Funk Brothers to preach the holy gospel of country, rock and acoustic beauty. The Mojave Collective, six young men from the Deep South (of Liverpool), play American roots music with a British Pop sensibility and a haphazard sense of style which has seen them hailed as \'crap\' (Woman\'s Own), \'indifferent\' (Gramophone) and \'pretty damn good actually\' (NME). Now working the release of their debut LP, \"Rust&Dust\" (Mayfield Label) From beautiful acoustic country-tinged ballads with lush 3 and 4-part harmonies to barnstorming, freewheeling rock ‘n’ roll, the Mojave Collective absorb, roll, smoke and then stomp on the doobie of all that is great in the Anglo-American tradition, playing like the Small Faces had spent time hanging out with The Band and The Stones in California in 1968 (which they may well have done – this band have never been overly fussed by little things like details when there’s rock and ...
