| | Iron Butterfly Ball CD - Import Iron Butterfly Discography of CDs
Following the huge success of their second record, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Iron Butterfly scored a second straight Top Five album with Ball. While it didn't have any acid rock freak-out to compare with the epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," Ball was a more ambitious album, as the group experimented with shorter, more melodic songs. Like any Iron Butterfly album, the quality of the material is wildly inconsistent, yet cut for cut, Ball is a more consistent album than their two previous records, as the group trimmed away some of the acid rock excesses of their earlier records while retaining their brutally loud trademark heavy guitars. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Elvis Presley Moody Blue CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ball songs
$8.99 Recorded between February 4, 1976 & April 25, 1977. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
Elvis' last studio album is, in fact, a hodgepodge of recordings from several 1976 studio sessions and four concert tracks. Also included among the live songs are the Olivia Newton John hit, "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)," a pretty silly take on the Gladiolas' "Little Darlin'," and one of Elvis' favorite songs, "Unchained Melody."
Studio tracks include covers of Jim Reeves' country hit "He'll Have to Go," the George Jones hit "She Thinks I Still Care," and two singles that reached the pop Top 40, "Way Down" and the title track. The abundance of country songs on MOODY BLUE reflects the shift in Presley's audience, as does the chart performance of both singles (each reached the number one position on Billboard's country chart). Presley's vocals for the studio tracks were recorded in his den at Graceland.
The last Elvis Presley album released in the singer's lifetime, Moody Blue has a somewhat checkered history, especially among fans. Issued two months before Presley died, the album sold moderately well until Presley died -- then it soared up the charts to number three, as his most current album, and it ultimately sold two million copies. As to the music, the original ten-song album was a mixed bag of live recordings, interspersed with new studio work from the previous fall at Graceland. For all of its slapped-together feel, however, Moody Blue held up. The title song, authored by Mark James (who'd previously written "Suspicious Minds"), was just about as good a single as Elvis released in the 1970s, topping the country charts earlier in 1977; additionally, he did a superb re-interpretation of the George Jones hit "She Thinks I Still Care." "Little ...

| | David Berkman Leaving Home CD (2002)
Ball CD music
$9.69 Because Palmetto is an indie jazz label, chances are its solid catalog of artists will never be as well known as those with companies like Verve or Blue Note. This creates the challenge of getting some worthwhile players out into the mainsteam of traditional jazz, competing with limited resources but with at least the confidence that their roster is every bit as appealing. Berkman is a solid, swinging pianist and leader of a trio featuring bassist Ugonna Okegwo (bass) and Brian Blade (drums), enhanced by Chris Cheek's tenor sax, Dick Oatts' alto and flute, and labelmate Sam Newsome's soprano. The music was made possible in part by a Chamber Music America new works creation and presentation grant, and it's no surprise that there is a subtle classical elegance at work in the tone of some of these well-arranged, no-frills pieces. "Leaving Home" is a mournful meditation featuring a ...

| | Dancehall Techniques:Winston Riley Productions (1986-1991) Vinyl LP (2003)
Ball music CDs
$16.25 As fans are well aware, Techniques founder Winston Riley moved from singer to producer in the late '60s with the launch of the label named after his band. Techniques quickly left its mark, first in Jamaica and then, in 1971, in the U.K., with Dave & Ansel Collins' chart-topping "Double Barrel" smash. Riley remained on the cutting edge, and by the end of the decade was introducing the world to slack, via General Echo's debut album. Come 1985, while other producers quaked in the face of Prince Jammy's mind-blowing "Under My Slang Teng," Riley slapped back with Tenor Saw's "Ring the Alarm," storming the dancehalls with his earth-shattering "Stalag 17" dub version. Riley wasn't giving into the ragga rage yet, battling against the digitization of reggae with hard-edged versions of revived riddims, and even when he gave in to the inevitable, so laced with keyboard melodies were his versions that they barely sounded like ragga at all.
Dancehall Techniques captures this period, 1986-1991, in all its glory, as the producer unleashed a stream of stunning riddims and introduced the masses to a new generation of dancehall stars, toasters, singjays and vocalists alike. The set mixes them up but groups the riddims together, thus showcasing Riley's production and remix skills. Surprisingly, the set doesn't stretch back to 1985 and the featured version of "Ring the Alarm Quick" here is a later remix, but the disc does boast the bulk of the best of Techniques' hits from the rest of the decade. There's Super Cat's groundbreaking "Boops," which inspired even more songs ...
