Damaged Goods album
$15.05 If this album's title is a reference to McMurtry's shift from Columbia to revered country/folk indie label Sugar Hill, it couldn't have happened to a better singer/songwriter. McMurtry's writing is more focused and hard-hitting than ever. While many of the songs break the six-minute mark, they never grow tiresome. Even though far too much is made of his lineage (he's novelist Larry McMurtry's son), McMurtry has surely inherited some of his father's gift for storytelling, and his deadpan delivery helps put the songs over in a visceral way, with a minimum of sentimentality.
Buoyed by a cast of Texas all-stars including Lloyd Maines, Lisa Mednick and Charlie Sexton, IT HAD TO HAPPEN boasts a direct, unfussy production approach that is the perfect ...

| | Otis Rush Cold Day In Hell CD (1976)
Damaged Goods music CDs
$12.69 Two previously unreleased tracks have been added to this re-release.
COLD DAY IN HELL is one of the standouts from Otis Rush's 1970s catalogue. Rush's anguished vocals, piercing guitar leads, and overall gutsy attack are in full effect here on galloping rockers ("Cut You a Loose") and loping groovers ("Mean Old World") alike. Rush specializes in slow-burn down-tempo numbers--"You're Breaking My Heart," "Society Woman," and the wiry title track fall into this category, and each of these tracks give the Chicago axe-master plenty of room to stretch out on the fretboard.
Unlike a lot of the post-'60s ...

| | Chicago II CD (1970) Remastered
Damaged Goods album
$6.09 CHICAGO II remains a classic album, encapsulating its time (1969) in all its tumult and glory. The Vietnam War (and the civil unrest it inspired) was still raging, the counterculture dream had not yet crashed and burned, and rock music could be taken seriously as an "art form" while still generating radio hits. Chicago, with their then-new fusion of jazz, rock, and pop, rose high on the charts, while taken seriously both in and beyond the rock-critic establishment. (Some jazz listeners respected and enjoyed Chicago as well.) Their approach had a freshness and vibrancy--"25 Or 6 To 4" was surging, dramatic, and slightly ominous; "Fancy Colours" and "Make Me Smile" were full of soulful optimism; a four-movement suite showed the band had ambition beyond the three- or four-minute pop song. To paraphrase one of Chicago's song titles, it was only the beginning.
In some ways the first real Chicago album (1969's self-titled CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY had, in addition to the longer band name, a harder and somewhat more experimental sound), 1970's CHICAGO II is fairly progressive and jazzy, especially in comparison to the straight ...
| | Sonny Landreth Road We're On CD (2003)
Damaged Goods CD music
$15.05 THE ROAD WE'RE ON was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Guitar whiz Sonny Landreth hails from the Mississippi/Louisiana region, and his ability to bridge swamp rock, blues, and zydeco is a reflection of his home area's rep as a wonderful melting pot of roots music. THE ROAD WE'RE ON affirms Landreth's ability to tap into this well of inspiration, and with slide in hand the charter member of John Hiatt's Goners puts on a dazzling display. "All About You" finds him using a growling guitar to shape a Stevie Ray Vaughan-flavored shuffle, the snappy "Juke Box Mama" switches to some finely plucked steel-string work, and "Gone Pecan" chugs along convincingly with zydeco serving as the main source of inspiration.
Although the lyrics on this entirely self-penned ...
| | Mary J Blige Tour CD (1998)
Damaged Goods music CDs
$11.99 With the excitement only a live performance can engender, Mary J. Blige plows through all of her hits on THE TOUR. The 23-track collection of material was recorded at various venues along the route of Mary's 1997-1998 "Share My World" tour. Sounding a bit different from her studio recordings, such show- stoppers as "Sweet Thing," "My Life" and "I Can Love You" glow with the energy and ...

| | Natalie Imbruglia White Lilies Island CD (2001)
Damaged Goods CD music
$7.69 This follow up to 1998's wildly successful LEFT OF THE MIDDLE is full of the pop hooks that propelled that album to the top of the UK and US charts; in addition the intervening few years seem to have left the Natalie Imbruglia with a somewhat more mature pop sensibility. Her voice is still reminiscent of Lisa Loeb or a less-unhinged Fiona Apple, but the Australian singer's previous eager-to-please quality is tempered by the world-weary narrative of tracks such as "Talk in Tongues" ("flowers in the bin/close this hole I'm in") that undercut the sunny textures of songs like the Joni-flavored "Satellite."
Generally Imbruglia is at her best when she's least produced; her voice has more than enough commercial appeal without the assistance of tricky arrangements. Though some of WHITE LILIES ISLAND comes perilously close to falling into PJ Harvey-lite territory, the aforementioned brooding "Talking in Tongues," "Butterflies," and the powerful, anthemic, string-accompanied "Come September" point ...
