(1 Customer Review)
Personnel: Francesco Cafiso (saxophone); Francesco Cafiso; Aldo Zunino (bass instrument); Riccardo Arrighini (piano); Stefano Bagnoli (drums). Audio Mixer: Stefano Amerio. Liner Note Author: Ira Gitler. Recording information: Artesuono Recording Studio (10/31/2005-11/01/2005); Cavalicco, Udine, Italy (10/31/2005-11/01/2005). Photographers: Paolo Soriani; Luca d'Agostino. Francesco Cafiso is a marvel. An impressive bop-oriented altoist by the time he was 11, he toured Europe with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra when he was 13. Cafiso was 16 at the time of this 2005 recording, sounding tone-wise like Phil Woods, playing with great maturity and swinging hard. Rather than re-creating the past or working on standards, Cafiso contributed all eight selections to this quartet date. Some of the tunes are partly based on earlier songs (including a blues), but the music overall is pretty original while in the straight-ahead tradition. Cafiso, who is joined by a top-notch Italian rhythm section, is an obvious jazz giant of the future. Happy Time allows one to hear him near the beginning. ~ Scott Yanow Francesco Cafiso Happy Time Songs Purchase Happy Time CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Vincent Herring Mr. Wizard CD (2004)

| | Steve Turre Rainbow People CD (2008)
Happy Time
$13.65 Personnel: Steve Turre (trombone, percussion); Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone); Sean Jones (trumpet); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Peter Washington (upright bass); Ignacio Berroa (drums, percussion). On 2008's RAINBOW PEOPLE, veteran jazz trombonist Steve Turre leads an impressive ensemble that includes pianist Mulgrew Miller, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and bassist Peter Washington. Standout tracks on this vibrant set include "Brother Ray," a bluesy number that nods to one of Turre's mentors, Ray Charles, and the Spanish-tinged "Midnight in Madrid." High Note Records has been on a roll in 2008. Larry Willis and David "Fathead" Newman have both issued near career-defining statements on the label in 2008 -- and that's just naming two. To this illustrious duo add trombonist and composer Steve Turre, whose Rainbow People album -- his self-produced third release for the imprint -- may be the finest offering of his career as a leader. Turre surrounds himself with likeminded musicians he's played with ...
