Conga master Ray Barretto's 1976 release, INDESTRUCTIBLE, is one of those classic '70s LPs that is most representative of the Fania label's famous salsa brand. It is more than just a series of danceable salsa tracks however. For example, Barretto's band shifts seamlessly from salsa to jazz improvisation to Cuban son on "El Hijo de Obatala" while "El Diablo" infuses a slow bolero style over smooth, powerful vocals. And the title track itself still invokes old school flavors that today's salsa music sadly lacks. INDESTRUCTIBLE is a must have for any self-respecting '70s New York Latin collection.

Indestructible album
$13.35 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.

| | Herbie Hancock River: The Joni Letters CD (2007)
Indestructible CD music
$10.99 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. ...

| | Herb Alpert Whipped Cream & Other Delights CD (1965) Bonus Tracks
Indestructible album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown originals or, in the case of Lieber & Stoller's "Love Potion #9," so transformed by the Tijuana "treatment" as to be almost unrecognizable. Special mention must go to guitarist John Pisano and marimba man Julius Wechter, both of whom round out the sharp corners of a potentially raucous sound.
Building upon South of the Border's (1964) Top Ten success, Herb Alpert dismissed the contingency of Los Angeles-based ...
| | Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD (1970) Remastered
Indestructible CD music
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks.
The infectious boogaloo groove of "Right Off" has John McLaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-driven power chords dancing fervently around the relentless backbeat of Fender bassist Michael Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham. Gone are the trappings of bebop harmonies and modern jazz rhythms, save for ...

| | Univers Zero Heresie CD (1979)
Indestructible songs
$14.59 Univers Zero's debut recording, 1313, may be somber, but it's a walk in the park compared to their second release, which features more or less the same lineup as the first (oboe, bassoon, viola, violin, bass, guitar, keyboards, drums), except for an additional and prominent contribution of cathedral organ from guitarist/keyboardist Roger Trigaux. Studio overdubbing sometimes gives the five-man group the sound of a much larger chamber ensemble. Extremely dissonant and emotionally bleak, Heresie is sometimes quite close to the industrial and gothic genres -- which didn't really even exist for another five years or more. A Magma influence is readily discernible on the long opening track "La Faulx," which includes the guttural chanting favored by Magma's Christian Vander. (In the early '70s, Univers Zero drummer Daniel Denis was employed as a second drummer in Vander's group.) "Jack the Ripper," the second long piece, maintains the oppressive atmosphere, and after a long, brooding introduction, introduces the nervous, jabbing ostinato patterns which were to become a Univers Zero trademark. This music on this CD might have little to do with rock, and might also be a massive downer, but the quality of the writing and playing is extremely high. Michel Berckmans' solo work on oboe and bassoon work is magnificent, and Patrick Hanappier's string playing (violin and viola) also demonstrates the precision of a trained classical musician, along with demonic avant-garde scraping and howling on "Jack the Ripper." ...

Indestructible music CDs
$29.99 One of the missions Leo Feigin, founder of Leo Records, set for himself with his label was the dissemination of the music of improvising Russian musicians who had garnered very little prior exposure in the West. Ganelin Trio, led by keyboardist Vyacheslav Ganelin, was one of the primary bands in this venture. This live double LP is a representative sample of their work, although it differs somewhat from their previous oeuvre in that Ganelin is heard in some of his earliest explorations of the synthesizer. To some extent, the group takes as its model Cecil Taylor's early-'60s ...
