Helloween: Kai Hansen (vocals, guitar); Michael Weikath (guitar); Markus Grobkopf (bass); Ingo Schwichtenberg (drums). Recorded at Musiclab Studio, Berlin, Germany in 1985 and Horus Sound Studio, Hannover, Germany in July 1986. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Helloween followed up their very popular self-titled mini-LP with 1986's even more accomplished Walls of Jericho, a disc that saw the quartet from Hamburg, Germany, outperforming expectations and quickly defining their sonic identity. The instrumental title track soon gives way to amazingly mature and complex compositions like "Ride the Sky," "Phantoms of Death," and the awesome "How Many Tears" (even more ambitious 13-minute epics would soon follow). And although these were heavily reliant on Iron Maiden for inspiration, it was Helloween's speed metal innovations that clearly helped make the songs so special and influential for future bands. Even the album's lyrically challenged, somewhat one-dimensional moments ("Warrior," "Metal Invaders") usually succeed, thanks to the group's uncontainable energy. On the downside, the album continued to expose Kai Hansen's limitations as a singer, but the band would soon remedy this disadvantage by bringing on teenage phenom Michael Kiske as lead vocalist. [The CD reissue of Walls of Jericho offers a complete recap of Helloween's first incarnation by combining it with their eponymous mini-LP and the Judas EP in chronological order.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Coal Chamber Chamber Music CD (1999)
Walls Of Jericho
$15.05 2nd Rel;Guests Ozzy Osbourne
Coal Chamber: B. Dez Fafara (vocals); Meegs Rascon (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Rayna Foss Rose (bass); Mike "Bug" Cox (drums). Additional personnel: E. Blue (vocals, keyboards); Ozzy Osbourne, Aimee Echo (vocals); Amir Derakh (keyboards, Micro-Moog synthesizer, percussion); Josh Abraham (keyboards, programming); Troy Van Leeuwen, Jay Baumgardner, Jay Gordon (keyboards); Brian Virtue, Anthony Valcic, Phil Western (programming); Georgie The Pug, DJ Lethal. Recorded at Long View Farms, North Brookfield, Massachusetts and Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California. In retrospect, White Zombie was one of the most influential metal bands of the '90s -- their breakthrough album, La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1, relied more on camp theatrics than catchy melodies or guitar riffs, and the follow-up, Astro-Creep 2000, featured an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production that camouflaged the simplicity of the music. Like many of the more popular alternative metal bands of the late '90s, Coal Chamber owe something to White Zombie's musical approach, often relying on noise, texture, and sheer aggression to put their music across, and sometimes neglecting craft in the process. In following up their popular yet somewhat uneven debut, Coal Chamber follows the White Zombie blueprint to a tee on its second album, Chamber Music, expanding the production palette to include electronic/industrial sounds, a bit of updated goth (i.e., more by way of Marilyn Manson than Bauhaus), and even a few orchestrations. In pure sonic terms, all of this means that Chamber Music is a better listen than its predecessor, and since it packs just as much of a wallop, it can be seen as a step forward. In another sense, however, it's something of a holding pattern, because even though the band's sound has grown more eclectic, they don't show significant growth as songwriters. Coal Chamber is still plagued by unmemorable guitar riffs that ride one note, or the same two chords, for far too long, and they simply aren't rhythmically interesting or complex enough to take this approach repeatedly. Plus, in the wake of Orgy's successful cover of New Order's ...
| | Genesis Selling England By The Pound CD (1973)
Walls Of Jericho
$19.79 If one had to pare the prog-rock story down to a handful ofessential albums, this would undoubtedly be one of them. SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND was the culmination of all that Genesis had been striving for since their late-'60s inception, the refinement of the vision that developed on TRESPASS, NURSERY CRYME, and FOXTROT (somewhere in the world, there's been a second-wave prog outfit named after every one of thesealbums). The fusion of a complex classical mind with an electrified rock heart and pastoral folk spirit defined Genesis' anatomy, and never more effectively than on SELLING ENGLAND. Peter Gabriel's startlingly unpretentious tale-spinning is at its best on "The Battle of Epping Forest". Tony Banks's elegant, sophisticated keyboard work is a vital element of nearly every tune, and the electric/acoustic guitar tapestry woven by Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford is the perfect icing on the cake. Somewhat anomalous but entirely welcomeis the Gabriel-era band's catchiest, quirkiest song "I KnowWhat I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", the tale of a somewhat daft gardener. Phil Collins's lead vocal on the gorgeous acoustic ...

Walls Of Jericho
$18.95 "Elegant simplicity, wonderfully plaintive muisic". The Scotsman, Edinburgh, ScotlandI have written in depth in the Armchair Magician section about my experience returning to music. In brief, when listening to musicians in Istanbul who loved what they were doing, I promised myself that I would not write music if it caused me pain. I was willing to give it up if it couldn't create joy in my life. Later that year, I sat at the piano, my mind full of the melodies that are now recorded in Armchair Magician. These songs were my expression of those months on the road. One friend wrote, "The music nurtures my sense of peace." And that is what these travels and this journey to music did for me. After so much time on the road, we began to long for a place that felt like home in this country that was so far from my country of birth. This plea sent out to the night sky, started us on yet another journey, this one into the workings of a farming village of only 15 families located in the foothills of the mountains. In the winter, we are battered by a weather system that pushes across the Siberian continent and over the Japan Sea. We found a 100-year -old farmhouse on a cliff and set up our ceramics studio there. Living in the crowded city below, we had forgotten the joy of simply gazing out into a misty expanse. Our location above Deep Valley gives us an ever-changing vista of rising clouds and fog, shadow and light. The valley below is the home to three traditional ...
