A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound. Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts on the tracks, making them less spare and distinguishing the arrangements more. Aeoliah is a new age spiritualist who designs his long-form tone pieces to be healing blankets of sonic glee. Here, his aim is to "harmonize the bodies and emotions" of babies, children, and expecting mothers. Of course, the liner notes stress the music's value for any adults wishing to enhance "healing arts." It is all very sincere, but when you peel away the layers of celebrity endorsements and holistic theorizing, this album is really just two 20-minute-plus instrumental tracks consisting of breathy keyboards and soothing, surging, and entirely synthetic texture. It is not bad, per se, but at the same time, a carefully recorded nature album might be just as relaxing and unhindered by an agenda that could set it up to fail. In the 1950s, CBS Records (now Sony Music Entertainment) issued two compilations of 1920s and '30s recordings by Ted Lewis, the 10" LP Classic Jazz on the Columbia label in 1950 and the 12" LP Everybody's Happy on Epic in 1955. This discount-priced compilation combines those two releases, although there is some confusion about what tracks were on the earlier versions. The back of the CD lists only eight tracks (tracks 9-16) as having constituted Everybody's Happy, but the reprinting of that album's liner notes states twice that the album contains 12 tracks. Presumably, there was some overlap with Classic Jazz that has been eliminated, but if so, this should have been indicated. (Another imponderable is the confusion about when "Farewell Blues" was recorded; the new annotations say 1929, while the old notes says 1935.) In any case, Collectables has significantly improved the contents by adding half again as many bonus tracks, eight recordings from the same era, all of them popular Lewis recordings.
