On this enjoyable CD, singers George French, Germaine Bazzle (whose deep voice takes some getting used to) and Johnny Adams get first billing, taking two to four songs apiece and sharing "Mood Indigo" and a blues medley. However, it is the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center Jazz Orchestra that is the real star. Fortunately, the band has plenty of opportunities to play (the singers get out of the way quickly), and such soloists as trumpeters Nicholas Payton, Jeremy Davenport and Willie Singleton, tenors Ed Peterson and Tony Dagaradi, altoist Wessell Anderson and pianist Peter Martin are among the many individual stars. The repertoire is primarily swing standards, including "Bye Bye Blackbird," "Sometimes I'm Happy" and "Let's Get Lost," and the renditions are quite spirited and fresh. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Cristina Branco might just be the best fado singer since the great Amalia Rodrigues, the woman who defined the genre. There's a subtlety to her voice that catches the emotions -- and fado, like blues or flamenco, is about feel -- and she never becomes histrionic, letting things stay in check, with the understatement much more eloquent. With this disc she refines and expands upon her two previous studio albums, even to the extent of the unaccompanied "Molinera" that closes the record, a song in a 13th century dialect. The musical relationship between Branco and husband Custodio Castelo, who arranges and plays the difficult Portuguese guitar (which gives fado its distinctive, mournful instrumental sound), continues to grow and deepen, while the other instruments -- guitar and double bass, build a framework for songs like the delicate "Musa." As with all fado, the lyrics are the crux of the matter, and Branco has chosen some beautiful poems (all well translated in the booklet), with "Tu Tens de Me Acontecer" a particular standout. But with a set this sublime, it's almost impossible to single out any one song above the others. ...

The first anthology to focus exclusively on June Carter Cash's decades-spanning career, 2005's KEEP ON THE SUNNY SIDE offers up 40 of her finest moments. Born into the legendary Carter Family, June took to playing folk and country tunes on autoharp and guitar, as well as singing in a distinctive, high-pitched voice. Later, her earthy beauty, bold personality, and good-natured humor would lead to success as a comedienne and, eventually, gain the attention of then-troubled Johnny Cash. While bringing Cash stability before and during their marriage was one of her greatest achievements, June also crafted an impressive song catalog, both with and without Cash and other members of the Carter Family. Highlights here include the uplifting title track (which appears in three different versions), and "Jackson," a raucous duet with Cash that became a virtual theme song for the couple. Though June may have been overshadowed by her more-famous relatives, this collection proves that she was a compelling performer in her own right.
