(2 Customer Reviews)
Massive Attack was always the most creative and exploratory group of the trip-hop movement, and, at their best, made some of the most evocative electronica-influenced pop of the 1990s. Though all of the band's albums are worth considering individually, COLLECTED is a highly effective one-stop primer, drawing equally from BLUE LINES, PROTECTION, MEZZANINE, and 100TH WINDOW (and adding one previously unreleased track). The band's mix of glacial, heavy-lidded grooves, sliding electronic textures, jazzy highlights, and nocturnal atmospheres topped off by a rotating cast of male and female vocalists is here in all its glory, making COLLECTED a great place to sample Massive Attack's stunning catalogue.
COLLECTED is the first Massive Attack best-of anthology, and as such is a welcome addition to their catalogue. In fact, COLLECTED does a more than effective job of supporting the general belief that Massive Attack were not only one of the most groundbreaking groups of the 1990s, but that their influence has been pervasive, in electronica, R&B, and pop, in the years since.
M.A.'s albums BLUE LINES, PROTECTION, MEZZANINE, and 100th WINDOW are equally represented across 13 tracks, giving a cross-section of the group's sweeping, claustrophobic, noir-ish trip-hop. The set excludes soundtrack work and 12-inch releases, but it does include a previously unreleased track entitled "Live With Me," an enticement for long-time fans who already own the studio releases. Unlike a lot of trip-hop, Massive Attack's still sounds fresh and inventive, making the collection an excellent, and much needed, release.

Rolling Stone (p.71) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Slowing hip-hop's funk down to a crawl, delivering dyspeptic raps in raspy whispers and texturing their tracks with the crepuscular film of heavy dub....[They] defined the trip-hop sound." Uncut (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "COLLECTED is an impressive reminder of just how innovative and intensely beautiful Massive Attack have been throughout their 15-year journey." Collected album
$13.39 Standing in sharp contrast to the blinged-out extravagance of another New York rapper who shares his initials, J-Zone is a well-realized and often hilarious caricature of life on the opposite end of the economic spectrum. In between attempting to romance the neighborhood women with trips to new French restaurant La Chateau Blanc (that'd be White Castle) and haggling over a parking spot with his prickly grandmother, the compulsively self-effacing Zone obsesses over his broke-down ride ("5-$tar Hooptie"), stubbornly demands money for freestyles ...
| | Cure Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years) CDs (2004) Remastered
Collected CD music
$38.29 Recorded between 1978 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Johnny Black.
A remarkable four-disc set of B-sides and rarities, JOIN THE DOTS serves as a sort of alternate history for the Cure, one of the world's most beloved post-punk/alt-rock bands. Painstakingly compiled by Cure frontman (and the group's only constant member) Robert Smith, DOTS provides dozens of glimpses into the literal flip-side of their singles by collecting many long-lost tracks, including the classic songs previously featured only on the cassette version of STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES.
Disc one begins in the late 1970s and consists of early tracks that show the Cure in a wildly adventurous mode--tearing into the punky "Pillbox Tales," drifting through the gloomy "Descent," and bouncing along to the oddly danceable "Throw Your Foot." By disc two, Smith and ...

Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker made their debut as Zero 7 to much acclaim with 2001's SIMPLE THINGS. The UK duo's follow-up, WHEN IT FALLS, is a refinement of their style, rather than an expansion. Producers/songwriters ...
