$8.89 Original score by Marty Stewart, Kristin Wilkinson, Larry Paxton.
Sure, the movie was no Sling Blade, even if directed by the one and only Billy Bob Thornton. But let's face it, they took two hours outta the thing! All the griping aside, the score, composed and performed by country music renaissance man Marty Stuart -- and his collaborating band members Kristin Wilkinson and Larry Paxton -- is something else completely. Comprised of 23 tracks, Stuart's score does sound like soundtrack music, but no matter. He and his sextet have taken the drama of the film's text and created an aural theater of the American West. At the heart of each theme is a core of mandolin, viola, bass, guitar, accordion, piano, and percussion. Orchestrations ride ambiently in the background, highlighting tension and drama. In "Edge of the World," cornets play at the music's outermost edge, hinting at a red Sonoran sunset. In another place, guitars, both strummed and soloed upon, create an impressionistic picture of a campfire jam session. Elsewhere, "Strawberry Tango, Part One and Two" features a full horn and string section painting the atmosphere at a cantina dance from its wild beginnings until its sultry ending. Daniel Lanois, who scored Thornton's Sling Blade (well, it actually sounds as if he threw a bunch of leftover studio bits on a tape for the movie), makes a return appearance here with an actual song. The track "Porque" features the stirring ...

$11.39 With EDEN, Broadway diva Sarah Brightman ("Requiem," "Cats") stretches beyond the constraints of what's considered show music. Here, she sings an assortment of classical adaptations, rock, and sleek modern pop songs.
The entrancing opener, "In Paradisum" combines pre-recorded nature sounds, atmospheric textures, and echoes of Gregorian chant, setting the regal and eclectic mood. "Nella Fantasia" is an adaptation of a tune by movie soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone, with Italian lyrics by Ferrau, and here the exquisite longing in Brightman's voice transcends all language barriers. She transforms Kansas' philosophical hit "Dust in the Wind" into a theatrical ballad that transcends time or setting. The production is lavish, judiciously mixing lustrous, gently throbbing modern pop textures, and conventional orchestration in a way that showcases the songs and the singer without being obtrusive or maudlin.
Another special Asian release with a bonus VCD featuring 3 MTV videos plus an interview.

$16.15 Kismet, a stage and film success of the mid-'50s, became a hot property again when Alfred Drake, who had starred in the Broadway and West End productions, undertook a U.S. tour in 1962. The original Broadway cast album was on Columbia Records, with the original soundtrack album on MGM. Soon, other labels wanted a recording in their catalogs, and Mantovani obliged Decca Records (London Records in the U.S.) with this version. (Capitol Records followed with one featuring Gordon MacRae and Dorothy Kirsten later in 1964; in 1965, RCA Victor recorded Drake when he brought his touring revival to Broadway.) Normally, an album such as this, on which individual singers are cast in specific roles, is categorized as a studio-cast recording; but any album on which Mantovani appears is a Mantovani album as far as the record industry is concerned, and accordingly the conductor receives top billing. In fact, the major presence on the disc is Robert Merrill, who plays the starring role of Hajj the street poet and, with his dramatic baritone, makes much of songs like "Rhymes Have I," "Fate," and "Gesticulate." But Adele Leigh, portraying Hajj's daughter Marsinah, also makes a good showing with "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," and, accompanied by Kenneth McKellar's Caliph, "Stranger in Paradise." McKellar is effective in "Night of My Nights," and Ian Wallace, as the Wazir, has lots of fun with "Was I Wazir?" George Forrest and Robert Wright's score, based on the works of Alexander Borodin, is well suited to Mantovani's heavily orchestrated approach, ...
