| | James Brown Love Power Peace: Live At The Olympia, Paris, 1971. CD (1992) Live Paris 1971
Last Man Standing music CDs
$7.05 Recorded live at The Olympia, Paris, France on March 8, 1971. Includes liner notes by Daddy Cool.
Recorded in 1971 at L'Olympia in Paris, France, LOVE POWER PEACE is the only live recording with the original JB's backing James Brown. The hardest working man in show business and his original band go full force with jams that capture the genuine sweat of the Godfather Of Soul shuffling across the stage in a gold lame fury, flanked by half- naked dancers. With original JB's such as MC/organist Bobby Byrd and bassist Bootsy Collins, you can hear the superior musicianship that is required to keep time with James Brown's frenetic pace. Drummers Jabo Starks and Tiger Martin would play both kits at once to get the groove ...
| | Exciting Wilson Pickett CD (1966)
Last Man Standing songs
$10.19 Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee and Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1965 and 1966. Originally relased on Atlantic (8129). Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
Let's be frank--Wilson Pickett's voice could strip the chrome off a Buick. Gritty, raw, and capable of emphatic shrieks and woeful moans, Pickett's voice is, in some ways, the paragon of Southern soul style. More consistent and packed with hits than its predecessor, IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, THE EXCITING WILSON PICKETT showcases the man's formidable vocal talents to the point of near perfection.
Two Chris Kenner songs--the blazing, dance-floor-filling "Land of 1000 Dances" (a certified soul classic) and the sprightly groove-laden "Something You Got"-- kick off the set. Pickett co-wrote much of the material here with Stax staff member Steve Cropper, among others. The timeless ...

| | Devastations Coal CD (2006)
Last Man Standing music CDs
$10.59 Australian trio the Devastations debut with Coal, an album steeped in the outback-gothic vibe perfected by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. A similar set of influences is at play in the Devastations sound: the Gun Club, Bryan Ferry, Lee Hazelwood. (On a more recent tip, American Music Club and Elliott Smith are also worth mentioning, especially in lead singer Conrad Standish's strained croon; "The Night I Couldn't Stop Crying" is a particularly Mark Eitzel-like performance.) Although plainly derivative of their shared influences, the Devastations do make each song their own, through unexpected touches like the playful rhythm box samba beat that animates the opening "Sex and Mayhem" and the Western twang-guitar shuffle of "Take You Home." That said, an entire album's worth of little other than low-register vocals, minor-key tunes and self-consciously minimalist arrangements does get a bit draggy by the final third. ~ Stewart Mason
Devastations The Hype"I heard this for the first time in Australia. Within five minutes I had tears streaming down my face. It gives me feelings I can tap into outside of myself when I can't quite tap into what is going on inside. That for me is most precious."-Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O, MOJO Magazine"Devastations are; the sound of a meteor cooling in the cut grass; the clash of a terrible beauty with the customary; Tom Carlyon, Hugo Cran and Conrad Standish. The Devastations are all about silence. Holes; big enough and empty enough to fill the grand canyon. Silence and how you fill it. And how much you fill it, and what you fill it with, and when? And the answer to that last part of the puzzle is song. And song is where Devastations come in. They neither sound like the past or this fad. This is timeless, because it is of the heart, and the soul is always timeless."-The Birthday Party guitarist Rowland S. HowardThe StoryDevastations are from Melbourne, Australia. They are the first band signed to Brassland on the strength of an unsolicited demo, and it won't take long listening to their sophomore album Coal to figure out why we were so enthusiastic about presenting them to you, the listener.Formed in late 2002, Devastations consciously chose to ignore the strut and bluster that dominated the musical landscape at the time, instead mining a deep well of their own, full of understated emotion, veiled menace, and a distinct flair for creating a romantic mood. It was this music's unique intimacy, its ability to forge a human connection, which caused all those peers to sing their praises. Their self-titled debut brought them invitations to open for artists like Dirty Three, Cat Power, and the Tindersticks -- the latter of whom they've supported extensively in both Australia and Europe. After an excellent initial reception in Australia, Devastations choose to follow in the footsteps of spiritual ancestors like the Go-Betweens and Birthday Party, and make their way in the larger world. They moved to Berlin in 2003, and played their first European show in September as part of 'Bada Bing', a concert ...
