One of Milton Nascimento's most experimental albums, Milagre Dos Peixes was originally released in 1974. Accompanied by the Som Imaginário, Nascimento presented this album in a theater show in Rio and Sao Paulo, with orchestra, and the result live recorded and released on a double album called Milagre Dos Peixes Ao Vivo. In one of the worst periods of military dictatorship, all lyrics were systematically censored, the reason why the album is instrumental. Not entirely, to be sure. He can be heard crying "Eu Tô Cansado" (I Am Tired), and he also sings the lyrics of "Sacramento," having the boy Nico Borges delivering "Pablo" with that mixture, so dear to Nascimento, of a poor boy's ingenuity filled with a religious aura. It can be said that this album was especially suited for the talents of Naná Vasconcellos, who adds so much life to it. A must-have classic. ~ Alvaro Neder

Milagre DOS Peixes music CDs
$10.09 The John Butler Trio's U.S. debut album, Sunrise Over Sea, is phenomenal -- from the opening notes of "Treat Yo Mama," a muscular and soulfully expressive roots rocker, to the final strains of the expansive, ten-minute-long opus "Sometimes." The John Butler Trio is arguably the best musical group Australia has to offer in 2005, and Butler's superb, bluesy riffs and innovative melodies are only part of the JBT musical equation. The sturdy ...

| | Soul Of Ben Webster CDs (1995)
Milagre DOS Peixes songs
$19.15 In addition to THE SOUL OF BEN WEBSTER, this compilation includes Harry Edison's GEE, BABY AIN'T I GOOD TO YOU and Johnny Hodges' BLUES A-PLENTY in their entirety.
Recorded in Hollywood, California and New York in 1957 and 1958. Originally released as three separate LPs on Verve (8359), (8211) and (6123). Includes liner notes by Francis Davis and original release liner notes by Benny Green and Nat Hentoff.
This two-CD set is slightly misnamed. Not only does it feature the tenor stylings of the great Ben Webster, it also contains a full album by trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison called GEE, BABY AIN'T I GOOD TO YOU and altoist Johnny Hodges' full LP, BLUES A-PLENTY. Webster appears on Edison's album but does not play on all of Hodges'. In fact, he sits out on five of the eleven Hodges tracks.
The music itself is all quite memorable, featuring notables such as trumpeters Art Farmer and Roy Eldridge, pianists Oscar Peterson and Billy Strayhorn, and trombonist ...
| | John Sheridan They Can't Take That Away From Me: Arbors Piano, Vol. 5 CD (1999)
Milagre DOS Peixes album
$13.35 The pianist from Jim Cullum's San Antonio based jazz band goes it alone on 15 solo piano cuts. Sheridan's thing is stride and swing; in fact, few pianists play the lyrical, bouncy stride piano these days as well as Sheridan, and he's a jewel just for that. Moreover, he's remarkably steady and consistent, the epitome of in-the-pocket ...

| | Rock 'N' Roll Bell Ringers CD (2005) (Import) Reissue; United Kingdom
Milagre DOS Peixes album
$16.65 In the mid- to late-'50s, about a decade before it became a quite successful pop/rock and soul label, Bell Records was putting out lots of budget-priced covers of then-current rock & roll hits. The quite detailed and historically astute liner notes to Rock 'n' Roll Bell Ringers don't exactly say so, but the idea was pretty exploitative: take a current chart hit, record a cover with some faceless singers backed by New York session musicians, and sell it for a lower price than the original version. No doubt these roped in customers who didn't know (or didn't care) that what they were buying wasn't exactly the same recording they'd heard of the song on the radio. This anthology has 26 such examples, and although some top musicians like Al Caiola and Panama Francis played on at least some of these recordings, just one of these singles featured singers who were bona fide hitmakers (for the surprise answer, read on). While it's amusing and historically interesting that this sort of thing was going on -- and apparently turning a profit -- the actual records, as you'd expect, aren't very interesting. It's not astonishing that these interpretations ...
