Year Of Slow Days album
$15.05 When Jonas Bering followed up Bienfait a few months after release with the Emballages 12", it was apparent that the Frenchman was beginning to develop a thicker, fuller, more dance-oriented sound -- a sound that was also beginning to shed the inspirations that were previously perceptible to a fault. This progression continued up to the release of Sketches for the Next Season; another pair of Kompakt twelves -- including Normandie, one of the label's best of 2003 -- along with an excellent release for Logarythm (as En:no) and a contribution to Sentrall's Drive the Five series ("Down to Big Sur," a shuffle-tech track on par with the best Schaffelfieber entries) all paved the way. With the exception of "Normandie 1," Sketches for the Next Season is made up from all-new material, and though its formatting lends itself to home listening, it's a lot more likely to induce bodily movements than Bienfait. Once upon a time, Bering's basslines were deliberate and perceptible, if not all that substantial when placed in a club context. The basslines here are lithe and chunky at once, ...
| | Kaito Hundred Million Love Years CD (2006) (Import) Germany
Year Of Slow Days CD music
$15.05 After the charm of Kaito's first disc won over the hearts of trance music naysayers and won favor with the hard-hearted ambient purists via the beatless version of the album, Kompakt began a mild onslaught of releases exploring the melodic, epic side of techno that bordered on progressive house/trance. Many of these records infused the spirit and romanticism of early Detroit releases with the dramatic arrangements of European electronic music from the early '90s. And while a few hit the mark dead on, there were others that never really captured the formula quite as well as Kaito. So with Hundred Million Light Years, Kaito retains that blueprint and expands further upon his musical vocabulary to keep things moving in a progressive direction (progressive in the evolutionary sense, not the stylistic). The album's opener "Color of Feels" and "Hundred Million Light Years" are reminiscent of Carl Craig's epic Landcruising record, as well as his "Dominas" remix of Maurizio, and is a wonderful reminder ...

Year Of Slow Days album
$10.95 An American saturday night is not an unusual topic for a country song but Brad Paisley's celebration is. Paisley sees a typical weekend night as a cultural collision of French kisses, Italian Ices, Canadian bacon and margaritas, a place where Mexican and Dutch beers chill side by side in a bucket of ice. If ...

| | Einsturzende Neubauten Tabula Rasa CDs (1993) Bonus CD
Year Of Slow Days CD music
$11.45 Einsturzende Neubaten's full-length forays into industrial sound had become progressively less frequent by 1993's TABULA RASA. Assorted members were increasingly called away on side projects, most notably Blixa Bargeld, who had taken on a role as Nick Cave's loyal sideman. TABULA RASA is EN at its most musical, though it's a matter for speculation whether this is a reflection of changes in Berlin since the band's inception in 1980 or just a result of EN's broadening horizons.
N.U. Unruh's constructed instruments have their place, but are generally subservient to melody on such tracks as the heavily metaphorical "Blume," whispered in guest vocalist Anita Lane's almost saccharine tones. EN gracefully (that's ...

$9.79 Biirdie's debut album, Morning Kills the Dark, projects the aura of naïvete quickly getting eroded as the protagonists become wise to the ways of the world, though retaining a wry determination to sink rather than swim, or at least stay afloat. | | Reuber Sudpol CD (2007) (Import) Germany
Year Of Slow Days CD music
$15.05 Reuber's fourth solo release is a pleasant affair, serving as a reminder of electronic roots as much as 2007-era trends, if not more so, as well as being a sonic tribute to the South Pole (Sudpol's translation into English) and Antarctica, also fertile ground for any number of ambient and avant-garde experimenters. The way Sudpol begins with the slow rising build of "Altweiber," all steady synth notes and compressed production, could just as easily be from an adventurous musician from Reuber's native Cologne thirty years ago ...
