Brand New Sin's self-titled debut is an example of everything that is right about hard rock in 2002. Brutal guitar riffs injected with lethal doses of blues, gritty vocal hooks, and thunderous drum beats abound on this album, as Brand New Sin goes to great lengths to prove that rock is not dead and is in store for a solid kick in the caboose. Mixing equal parts Guns N' Roses, Pantera, and Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society, these six men churn out thick blasts of molten heaviness that tread the thine line between intense hard rock and the dirtiest Southern metal imaginable. It is surprising how refreshing Brand New Sin's music is, considering hard rock is not a new trend. Yet while the 12 songs presented aren't the most innovative, they bridge the gap between rockers of yesteryear such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Sabbath with the more modern swamp rock of Down and C.O.C., scoring with a collection of songs that should appeal to any fan of hard rock, young and old alike. Frontman Joe Altier's prominent vocals are infectious yet grimy all at once, swerving past the pitfalls of hitting melodic notes and delivering in-your-face moshpit-inducing rock at its finest. The triple guitar onslaught is an amazing feat, yet never does Brand New Sin sound cluttered or overbearing with the surging riffs. The group features former members of Godbelow, who also managed to make quite a buzz during their time together, yet these six men have found themselves a new haven of heaviness in Brand New Sin, and have accomplished what some may think impossible, offering an album of crunchy guitar rock that is capable of remaining relevant amidst the hip-hop/metal and self-loathing of the nu-metal scene. ~ Jason D. Taylor

3 stars The Best Is Still To Come
I actually got this when it was first out, with different artwork. I guess that version is now long out of print, since the original label, Now Or Never, went belly-up shortly after the release. Anyway, I really want to like this album, and it does have some great songs, like,"Broken Soul," "My World," "SPP," and some near-misses like "The Oath" and "Missing You," but overall, and especially when listening to it straight through, I find it to be kinda boring. Too many of the riffs sound too similar, and Joe Altier's vocal melodies too often don't stray far from one another (he has this one note that he just loves to hit, and hit, and hit). It's better if taken a song or two at a time, but their sophomore release is much better. Good band though, like Black Label Society without the phony biker-gang schtick. BLS without the BS, if you will.

Not for wimps! These boys rock! They have a touch of southern sound but more Hard Metal with attitude. They came from the same mold as Black Label Society, that in it's self should demand your attention. Also check out their second album Recipe For Disaster for more thundering in your face Kickin no nonsense ROCK.

Symphony X Odyssey CD  (2002) Limited Edition

Brand New Sin album

Symphony X is certainly an anomaly: an '80s-style fantasy metal band who came along in 1994 (after Nirvana and Pearl Jam's success had seriously rearranged the rock landscape) and ended up acquiring a loyal Gen-X following (especially in Europe). In the '90s and 2000s -- a time when other young headbanger bands have embraced alternative metal and been influenced by punk, rap, and/or industrial -- Symphony X has maintained an unapologetically old-school outlook. And that old-school perspective remains on The Odyssey, which is a 2002 release but recalls the classic fantasy metal of '80s favorites like Queensr˙che, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ronnie James Dio, and Iron Maiden. A few of the riffs might bring to mind Metallica, a band that emerged in the '80s but has had a strong influence on alterna-metal combos of the '90s and 2000s. (Those who assert that Metallica eventually ended up becoming as influential as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest aren't off base). But even if some of guitarist Michael Romeo's heavier riffs have a somewhat Metallica-ish punch, everything else about this ambitious CD underscores Symphony X's love of '80s fantasy metal. From the conceptual lyrics to the Euro-classical influence to the elaborate arrangements and melodies, The Odyssey is a 2002 release that wouldn't have been out of place in 1985. By early-2000s standards, this material sounds dated. But dated isn't necessarily a bad thing -- if you hold a particular era in high regard, dated can actually ...

Because Brand New Sin singer Joe Altier's tuneful growling style rings quite similar to that of many a mid-2000s commercial hard rock singer (Scott Stapp and Chad Kroeger, to name but two), some listeners may hastily and unfairly dismiss this Syracuse quintet as yet another face in an already mundane crowd. But just a little bit of patience will be enough to prove that Brand New Sin and their second album, 2005's Recipe for Disaster, actually offer a whole lot more; typical, barn-burning tracks like "Arrived," "Days Are Numbered," or the excellent "The Loner" more accurately falling somewhere between Corrosion of Conformity (yes!), Black Label Society (hmmm?), and, yes, a little bit of Nickelback, too (ugh!). And yet, this is only the tip of the group's iceberg lettuce, and Recipe for Disaster continues to impress following irresistibly frenetic EP favorite "Black and Blue," which paves the way for increasingly formula-free material such as the tom-on-the-floor, acoustic guitar-strummed "Running Alone," the darker-tinged, more dramatic flair of "Vicious Cycles," and, combining the two strains, a pair of heartfelt love songs in "Once in a Lifetime" and "Wyoming." Hardly completely without fault, however, Recipe for Disaster's second half does stall on a few too many stock hard rockers; guitarists Kenny Dunham's and Kris Wiechmann's riffs and solos, while never anything less than interesting, are rarely unforgettable; and claims of the band's deep ...

Sword Age Of Winters CD  (2006)

CD $9.49  4.5 stars Audio Samples
Coming to grips with the Sword's unlikely genesis in the alternative music Mecca of Austin, TX, leads one to wonder whether heavy metal has finally become hip again. Depending on your generation, nothing will seem as simultaneously preposterous (Gen-X'ers who came of age during pop-metal's heyday and don't recognize it as an unrepresentative anomaly) or obvious (everyone else) when discussing a genre that's spent the bulk of its 35-year history on the absolute fringe of rock culture. If that isn't "alternative," well, what is? In any case, glorifying heavy metal's prototypical qualities is exactly what the Sword is all about, and their 2006 debut, Age of Winters, sees them joining California's High on Fire, Sweden's Witchcraft, and Australia's Wolfmother (to name but a few) at the forefront of what's gradually become known in the mid-'00s as the "heritage" or "retro-metal" movement. No, not stoner rock -- that's sooo ten years earlier! The only thing the Sword and their ilk have in common with most '90s stoner rockers is recognizing that all heavy metal empires are sprung from the Black Sabbath cornerstone, and the token signs can be readily heard in these songs' ominous doom chords (just listen to opener "Celestial Crown" and "Lament for the Aurochs"), pummeling, down-picked staccato riff-runs ("Barael's Blade," "Ebethron"), lyrics about fantasy and legend ("Freya," "The Horned Goddess," etc.), ...

CD $9.65  3 stars Audio Samples
All too often, artists who showed great promise on their first albums ran out of steam by their second or third albums; their noble intentions, sadly, did not sustain them for very long. But that isn't a problem for Brand New Sin, who showed considerable promise on their self-titled debut album of 2002 and keep the artistic momentum going on their third album, Tequila. All of the influences that served Brand New Sin so well in 2002 continue to serve them well on this 2006 recording -- influences that range from Pantera, Metallica, Motörhead and Guns N' Roses to Lynyrd Skynyrd to Corrosion of Conformity and Down. But Tequila never sounds derivative -- not at all. Brand New Sin might love and respect their influences, but they never go out of their way to emulate them; they are admirably distinctive themselves, and their originality is very much in evidence on forceful, bluesy, whiskey-soaked offerings such as "Reaper Man," "Motormeth," "Said and Done" and "Spare the Agony." While Tequila is consistently relevant to the alternative metal scene of 2006, Brand New Sin never sacrifice their sense of the blues; their roots run deep, and they have no problem drawing on different rock eras (or even pre-rock eras) for inspiration. One of the tracks, in fact, is a delightfully swampy performance of the standard "House of the Rising Sun" (which has been recorded by everyone from Roy Acuff to the Animals to Joan Baez over the years). Lead singer Joe Altier is still ...

It may surprise some to find that Glenn Danzig turned 53 in 2008, but with a career that reaches back to the late '70s, including pioneering acts such as the Misfits and Samhain, he's been in the public eye for a long time. His greatest commercial success, however, has come with his namesake band, and with eight full-length albums to his credit, Danzig has left numerous quality songs on the cutting room floor. ...

Orange Goblin Healing Through Fire CD  (2007) With DVD

CD $13.05  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Ah, what to make of Orange Goblin -- a band that's almost always produced good, sometimes great, but rarely categorically excellent music over the course of a decade and five CDs, which saw them slowly transition away from the fading stoner/doom movement that originally inspired them before reaching something of a creative impasse on 2004's Thieving from the House of God. If anything, that album's more traditional but also less distinctive brand of heavy rock and metal was largely offset by the upside that was guitarist Joe Hoare's successful handling of all six-string duties, following the departure of co-founding guitarist Pete O'Mally. But its long awaited successor, Healing Through Fire, has no such excuse for not delivering the goods -- especially after marinating for a whole three years. Here, once again, Orange Goblin appear committed to treading the heavy metal middle ground, yet listeners may still spot a few subliminal signs of stoner rock hiding just beneath the surface of tracks like "Hot Knives and Open Sores" (featuring an inverted Trouble riff) and epic closer "Beginner's Guide to Suicide" -- not to mention vocalist Ben Ward flirting with a low-slung growl, reminiscent of Clutch's Neil Fallon on occasion. But with the possible exception of uniquely memorable opener "The Ballad of Solomon Eagle" and the also stoner-reminiscent "Cities of Frost," typical new efforts ...

As I Lay Dying Shadows Are Security CD  (2005) (Import) Bonus DVD; Japan

Brand New Sin CD music
CD $35.09
Import version contains a rare track and a NTSC, Region Code 2 DVD featuring live concert footage and promotional videos. Formed in Southern California and forged on the road, As I Lay Dying appeared as prominent players in a new wave of American metal. Not content to draw upon a single influence, the band pulls from early thrash, the Gothenburg (Sweden) style of death metal, and hardcore. What sets them apart from other bands of the metalcore genre is their dynamic song structure. Where they could get away with simple verse/chorus/verse templates, SHADOWS ARE SECURITY constantly shakes things up with new sounds and textures. Dual guitars carry the melody while Tim Lambesis' screaming vocals provide guttural aggression. "Empty Hearts" has Jordan Mancino's very musical drums doubling the guitar parts and propelling the song at breakneck speed. "Repeating Yesterday" is a brief respite from the chaos with a mid-tempo pulse and piano-accented ending. After a minute-and-a-half of tension-building static and feedback the final track "Illusions" explodes to life; using a more dissonant tone and treated vocal, it's the most hardcore moment on the album. The guitar fades out with a Doppler effect giving the impression that As I Lay Dying are pulling away from the pack and leaving everyone else in their wake. The third full-length from this California band finds vocalist Tim Lambesis and drummer Jordan Mancino the only remaining ties to the band that made 2003's Frail Words Collapse. Fans need not worry, though. The new recruits -- guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa and bass player Clint Norris -- have more than meshed with Lambesis and Mancino; they've helped make As I Lay Dying a stronger band. Detractors have often noted the debt these earnest hardcore kids owe to Scandinavian metal and while comparisons to In Flames are still viable here, especially on album opener "Meaning in Tragedy," there are plenty of other elements peppering Lambesis and company's take on metalcore. If anything, Shadows Are Security sounds like a more American record, with songs like "Confined" and "Empty Hearts" bringing a strong thrash element into play, although no one will ever confuse As I Lay Dying with the revivalist neo-thrash of Three Inches of Blood. ...
