Since the release of 1996's stellar From the Archives, Vol. 1, it's understandable to say that Tommy Bolin Archives subsequently went a bit overboard (it seemed like they released every single piece of tape they could get their hands on -- regardless of the sound quality). But when Tommy's younger brother, John Bolin, discovered a box full of forgotten tapes, the finest archival release since Archives, Vol. 1 was in place -- 2006's Whips and Roses. Featuring both strong alternate takes of Teaser classics and several previously unheard instrumental jams, Whips and Roses is unquestionably the best-sounding Bolin CD ever released (the project's producer, Greg Hampton, should certainly be commended). New versions of the hard-rocking "Teaser" and the Wes Montgomery-esque "Savannah Woman" come close to matching the officially released versions (adding grit to the playing improves the sometimes too-smooth sounds of Teaser). And out of the instrumentals, a killer take of "Crazed Fandango" (titled here as simply "Fandango") and "Cookoo" (which contains traces of the Teaser instrumental "Homeward Strut") are certainly standouts. It's rare that a compilation of outtakes could serve as a fine introduction for the new fan, but the material on Whips and Roses is so strong that it comes close to accomplishing this feat. A fine sampling of one of rock's all-time great guitarists. ~ Greg Prato

Tommy Bolin Whips And Roses Songs Whips And Roses Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) VERY, VERY COOL I've not had the time to really absorb this new Tommy Bolin album/CD yet, but from what I have listened to from it, it is the best Bolin release since Private Eyes. I've been fortunate to acquire many of the Tommy Bolin Archives releases, and the box set The Ultimate that began the task of promoting not only Tommy's music, but his due place along side Hendrix as one of THE guitar heroes. Now, if only Columbia Records will give his masterpiece Private Eyes it's deserved deluxe treatment. Submitted by PETE (Keokuk, IA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

TOMMY BOLIN COMES ALIVE! I was immediately impressed by the sound of this new Tommy release. Loud & powerful. His apparent confidence problems with Deep Purple are nowhere to be found on this disc. I still find it too bad that Purple fell apart before Tommy really had a chance to perhaps pull himself together and maybe even become Purple's very own Edward Van Halen or Randy Rhoads. I definitely want to get the follow-up to this release! Submitted by Peter E. Jr. (Keokuk, IA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$13.19 There were probably fewer people clamoring for this Cactus reunion in 2006 than for a Vanilla Fudge or Beck, Bogert & Appice one, but that didn't stop the famed plodding rhythm section from giving it another go. Original Cactus lead singer Rusty Day passed in 1982, but the core trio of bassist Tim Bogert, drummer Carmine Appice, and guitarist Jim McCarty recruited singer Jimmy Kunes and let fly with this hourlong set of forceful, sweaty blues-rock. Cactus were never known for their subtlety, and the simplistically titled V doesn't challenge the group's historically predictable game plan as it plows through familiar terrain with requisite enthusiasm but a lack of the imagination and creativity that made even minor ...

Whips And Roses songs
$14.59 This is the acid test. When Whips and Roses was released in April of 2006, it was a revelatory collection, showcasing many high quality -- performance and sound-wise -- alternate takes and demos of material that appeared on Tommy Bolin's Teaser in particular. All of these cuts came from a box found by Bolin's brother John ...

Whips And Roses CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented ...

| | Smith, April & The Great Picture Show Live From The Penthouse CD (2008)
Whips And Roses album
$8.39 \"I could take a great big bite out of you…I\'m out for blood baby I\'m vicious\", snarls April Smith over a slightly dark strummed guitar, carnival organ, and blasts of warm vintage guitar fuzz. She\'s tiny. She stands somewhere around 5\'2\", but she belts her lyrics like a gal twice her size on new tracks like \"Wow and Flutter\" and \"Colors\".Since releasing her 2005\'s debut album, loveletterbombs, April has been on the road nonstop playing shows with her band, The Great Picture Show - including a Jeff Buckley Tribute show in Chicago. She had her music featured in two hit shows on MTV: The Hills and Newport Harbor. In the middle of all this madness, April found inspiration, and geared up to write a new album.Fresh out of the studio with producers Dan Romer (Ingrid Michaelson, Jenny Owen Youngs) and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne), working on some new songs and cultivating new ideas. April has an exceedingly clear vision for her new music: She wants to take her classic retro pop sound and let it happen more simply, allowing a little Tom Waits-styled imperfection to take hold. April explains, \"When things sound too perfect, it\'s too contrived for me. You need a little dirt, a little fuck up that puts you in that moment.\"This chaos-friendly aesthetic is something April picked up while listening to Mr. Waits during her musically-charged youth. She grew up the youngest in a very musical home in Tom\'s River, New Jersey - the kind of place where Brian May solos were heard more often than rings from the telephone. With music all around her, it was only natural that April picked up music on her own - with her equally talented siblings, impromptu talent shows were commonplace in the Smith household. As a youth, icons like the Andrews Sisters, John Lennon, and Robert Plant figured into April’s life in a very meaningful way - so much to the point that when she ...
