The Presets' first full-length record differs slightly from their more happy-go-lucky Aussie dance compatriots, mostly for aesthetic reasons. The detached nature of Beams is more about subtle darkness and underlying sinister intentions, as evidenced on the slow-building opener, "Steamworks" -- which begins with the bassline from "Billie Jean" and moves into much more explosive sonic territory (and a rave horn for good measure). Beams represents a uneasy yet unforgettable combination of '80s gaudy pop flair and dark, propulsive rave beats, all with an unsubtle sense of humor. Borrowing nothing from their timid Blow Up EP (most of the songs from that release have been since adapted in live shows to sound more similar to Beams), the Presets have an impulsive, almost primitive charm to their dance music. With heavy bass throughout, keyboardist/vocalist Julian Hamilton experiments with heavy distortion and vocal alterations. On the wild electro-pop treat "Down Down Down," the group keeps to the song's namesake and effortlessly weaves in and out of looped tambourine percussion and dirty synth beats. The middle section is surprisingly experimental given the concise pop of "Are You the One?," "Down Down Down," and the minimalist, winsome cool of "The Girl and the Sea" (it's the only time Hamilton shows some true restraint in his singing, and it gives the song a mysterious edge throughout). "Worms" plods along to a wince-inducing squelching keyboard loop and doesn't feel like anything more than an unrealized experiment. "Kitty in the Middle" contains more hyper-sexual lyrics and whip sounds, and is saved by its simple and funky bassline. The best moment on the latter half is the rave-inspired sped-up/slow-down shifting on "I Go Hard, I Go Home," benefiting from the same wobbly vocal effect used on Tommy James & the Shondelles' "Crimson and Clover." Either heralded for its effectiveness or denigrated for its stupidity, the double-entendre heavy sexual lyrics sung by Hamilton would be a distraction if not for his ability to blend his call-and-answer shouting with the music so surreptitiously. Despite the darker tone, Beams is still a dance album at heart -- and a carnal one at that -- thereby making his mechanical yelping the ideal background noise. ~ Erik Leijon

Beams album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end of "Price of Gas," when he proclaims "I can tell you how this ends/We're going to win this," one can hope that Okerere is expressing his confidence in a bright future for his extremely talented band.
Although most remix albums offer little more than vaguely tweaked novelty, Bloc Party's ...

Beams CD music
$5.79 US post-punk revivalists Interpol's 2002 debut made it possible for a wave of Joy Division copycats to ape those dark-but-danceable sounds of the late-1970s/early-'80s. By 2004, coming off like the bastard offspring of Ian Curtis and Echo & the Bunnymen was a ticket to the top of the charts, even in America. Unsurprisingly, it took the Brits to do it right. The hue and cry over Editors (please observe the absence of ...
| | Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Some Loud Thunder CD (2007)
Beams music CDs
$11.49 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's self-released debut album defied the odds and became 2005's biggest indie success story, and their 2007 follow-up was one of the most anticipated releases of the year. SOME LOUD THUNDER was once again released by the band; however, the production values and overall musical scope took a clear step forward. The band brought in studio guru Dave Friedman to flesh out the sound and give a more robust sheen to a group that previously captivated with its lo-fi charms.
Luckily, this doesn't undermine that very charm. Frontman Alec Ounsworth still wraps his simple pop confections in eclectic ...

Beams music CDs
$9.75 1976's MODERN MUSIC was Be Bop Deluxe's fourth album, and--in many ways--the band's most refined and sophisticated. The compositional ambition and stylistic flourishes of glam rock still played heavily into the band's sound, recalling David Bowie and early Roxy Music. But guitarist/singer/songwriter/frontman Bill Nelson's ability to balance multi-part songs and complex arrangements with pop hooks is realized to excellent effect here. "Kiss of Light," for example, though dominated by a shape-shifting sensibility and Nelson's soaring, multi-tracked electrics, comes back again and again to its memorable, repeating chorus.
Nelson also has a penchant for dramatic, fantasy-tinged ballads ("The Bird Charmers Destiny," for example, contains lyrics about crystal balls, gypsies and white swans), and unabashed, pop-inflected rock "Bring Back the Spark." Be Bop Deluxe's hodge-podge aesthetic (MODERN MUSIC contains traces of everything from heavy metal to jazz to soft rock to R&B), the strength of musicianship, the artful balance of Nelson's arrangements, and the high flown ambition of it all impresses, making this a high point in the band's discography. This overlooked gem is a must for fans of the glam and progressive rock of the era.
Things had changed for Be Bop Deluxe by the time of the group's fourth album. The band that turned up in glam rock regalia on its 1974 debut, Axe Victim, was in suit and tie on the cover of Modern Music in 1976. Inside, the band's transformation into a sophisticated pop group seemed complete. Arrangements were still ornate, but the songs were dominated by their highly imagistic lyrics, and as often as not, Bill Nelson was borrowing ideas from the Beatles. It didn't quite work, despite pleasant numbers such as "Orphans of Babylon" ...
