It's difficult not to be taken with Be Your Own Pet; they play an immediately appealing brand of youthful, unhinged punk-pop that takes tips from the Buzzcocks and Blondie, as well as both low-fi DIY bands and contemporary noise-rock acts like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. As the five tracks on their 2006 SUMMER SENSATION EP (released on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label) demonstrate, the band, comprised of four teenage high-school friends, specializes in two-minute blasts of manic rock-&-roll energy that are reckless, uplifting, dirty, and beautiful. The vocals of frontwoman Jemina Pearl give the whole EP a sweet bite and a hooligan's vibe that will help keep it in any rock fan's disc player straight through the summer to the first day of school. From December 1971 to April 1972, Carlos Santana and several other members of Santana toured with drummer/vocalist Buddy Miles, a former member of the Electric Flag, and Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys. The resulting live album contained both Santana hits ("Evil Ways") and Buddy Miles hits ("Changes"), plus a 25-minute, side-long jam. It was not, perhaps, the live album Santana fans had been waiting for, but at this point in its career, the band could do no wrong. The album went into the Top Ten and sold a million copies. Recorded at the site of a volcanic crater, LIVE teams the blazing Carlos Santana and his post-Woodstock band with the righteous drummer/singer Buddy Miles (of BAND OF GYPSYS fame). This sunny, outdoors 1972 concert in Hawaii finds the guitarist doing some of his funkiest playing, with added six-string help from Neal Schon. Miles offers plenty of his signature soul-drenched vocals, and Robert Hogins' Hammond organ combines with the rhythm section to produce Latin grooves almost mighty enough to trigger an eruption.
There's the early-'70s-style instrumental modal rock of "Marbles," with Carlos lightly shifting his wah pedal to lend a phased voice to his searing solo. The already classic "Evil Ways" is played up-tempo, with a horn section gusting in on the tune's syncopated organ hits and raucous, jazzy solos by sax player Hadley Caliman and trumpeter Luis Gasca. "Them Changes" is also a bit faster and funkier than its original recording, done by Jimi Hendrix and his Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore. With this updated rendition taking place less than two years after Hendrix' passing, there's a poignancy to when Buddy Miles sings so fervently to the crowd, "Say yeah, if you've been goin' through a hell of a lot of changes!!"
