This psychedelic 60s Russ Meyer film was lambasted by critics byt did well at the box office. Extras include interview with Roger Ebert, documentaries, reflections from crew members, audio commentary, and more. BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is a riotous camp tale about three buxom young women, all aspiring pop singers, who move to Hollywood with hopes of making it big. In Russ Meyer's BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, all-girl rock band the Kelly Affair moves to Los Angeles in pursuit of fame and fortune. Upon meeting wealthy rock scenester Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell (John Lazar) at one of his lavish parties, they believe they've met the man who can bring them fame. Changing their name to the Carrie Nations, they navigate their way through a maze of sexual misadventures, drugs, and brushes with some very unpleasant characters only to find that fame comes at a price. Livening up the considerably frantic proceedings are Meyer starlets Edy Williams and Erica Gavin (VIXEN), as well as an appearance by the Strawberry Alarm Clock.
Finally invited to work within a major studio (20th Century Fox) following the enormous success of 1968's VIXEN, Meyer, along with screenwriter Roger Ebert, created the ultimate sex, drugs, and rock & roll film of the psychedelic era. An altogether odd mixture of comedy, drama, and left-field shocks punctuated with memorably wacky lines, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS lets Meyer's reliably decadent formula mingle agreeably with the psychedelia of the time. BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS was scripted by film critic Roger Ebert.
Meyer and Ebert were hired by Fox to do an actual sequel to THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, but were forced to ad a disclaimer, making it clear that the finished film had no connection to Jacqueline Susann's book, after Susann saw the finished product.
Z-Man's (John Lazar) exclamation "This is my happening...and it freaks me out!" is borrowed verbatim in AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY.
Another memorable Z-Man phrase "You will drink the black sperm of my vengeance!" is later quoted again in Meyer's BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRAVIXENS.
Meyer regular Haji makes a cameo appearance in the film.
The film was rated X upon its original release, but was reclassified as NC-17 when it finally appeared on video in the 1990s. Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Quotes/Excerpts: "Come on over to my pad! I've got a wading pool full of mayonnaise!"--Porn star Ashley St. Ives (Edy Williams) to dance partner
"This is my happening...and it freaks me out!"--Z-Man (John Lazar) at his big party
"They thrive on the humidity...and they never let me forget that all Los Angeles is a jungle."--Z-Man explaining the ferns in his mansion
"You're a groovy boy! I'd like to strap you on sometime!"--Ashley to Harris (David Gurian) at Z-Man's party
"You will drink the black sperm of my vengeance!"- Z-Man to Lance (Michael Blodgett) after Lance spurns his advances Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Reviews: 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t foretells the last days of hippy naivety..."-- Mark Powell, Total Film

Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Not a sequel to J Susann's film First, this is not a sequel to Valley of the Dolls. Intended for mature audiences, the film depicts a trio of young women who form a rock band and head to the decadent city of Hollywood CA. Upon arriving, they meet a unique agent to the stars nicknamed Z-Man who puts them under contract and starts them on a whirlwind 70's trip of sex, drugs, and hard rock music. Considered a cult classic by fans of the director, a man named Russ Meyer, the film inspired similar films such as Rocky Horror Picture Show. It also inspired the term "skin flick" which was used to decribe the numerous nude
scenes throughout the films of this era. Made during the year of the Sharon Tate murders, some said it was based in part on those events, but in truth, the film's plot was actually based on Russ's vision of the 60's and
70's lifestyles in Hollywood.
Altogether, quite an experience! Submitted by treker1028 (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls DVD
$14.49 When released theatrically in 1932, FREAKS was met with near universal disgust by critics and audiences alike, lasting in theatres for only a short time in the states and banned in England. The film stars Harry Earles as Hans, a suave midget who belongs to the sideshow of a seedy circus and who makes the mistake of falling in love with the beautiful Cleopatra, one of the "normal" circus performers. Learning that Hans is about to inherit a fortune, Cleopatra agrees to marry Hans even though she abhors him, planning to steal his money and get rid of him. When the freaks of the circus, who keep a watchful eye on Cleopatra, discover her scheme, they plan to exact an unforgettable revenge.
Far more unsettling than Browning's best known horror film, DRACULA, FREAKS has long been neglected due to its subject matter, even though it is a genuinely effective film. Gripping and often creepy, FREAKS manages to humanize its main performers, even looking at them with a sense ...

Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls movie DVD
$10.55 FLYBOYS is a good old-fashioned historical drama concerning the Lafayette Escadrille, a French regiment of American volunteer airmen serving the allied cause in WWI before the U.S. became officially involved. James Franco plays Blaine, a Texas rancher; he bunks with Eugene (Abdul Salis), an African American boxer whose been living in Paris as an ex-patriate to get away from American racism. Other fighters include a pampered New York scion (Tyler Labine) and a lanky, lazy Kansan (David Ellison). They all train under the patient hand of the French commander, succinctly embodied by the wondrous Jean Reno (THE PROFESSIONAL). Martin Henderson (TORQUE) is good and brusque as a jaded flier with a bunch of kills under his belt and an obsession with an ace German fighter; he wont let the new kids drink in the officer's club until they've shot down their first planes. It all unfolds in a no-nonsense linear narrative that reminds one of early films like THE DAWN PATROL (1930) and WINGS (1927); and there's a comfortingly familiar orchestral ...
