Portrait In Black And White
$6.38 Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Napoleon Murphy Brock (vocals, flute, tenor saxophone); George Duke (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Johnny "Guitar" Watson (vocals); Bloodshot Rollin' Red (harmonica); Ruth Underwood (marimba, vibraphone, percussion); Tom Fowler, James Youman (bass); Chester Thompson (drums). Recorded between December 1974 and April 1975. Digitally remastered by Bob Stone. Released soon after the live Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All contained more of the material premiered during the 1973-1974 tour, but this time largely re-recorded in the studio. The band remains the same: George Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Chester Thompson, Tom Fowler, and Ruth Underwood. Johnny "Guitar" Watson overdubbed some vocals and Captain Beefheart (credited as Bloodshot Rollin' Red) played some harmonica ("when present," state the liner notes). The previous album focused on complex music suites. This ...
| | John Coltrane Black Pearls CD (1958)
Portrait In Black And White
$9.59 Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet); Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on May 23, 1958. Originally released on Prestige (7316). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet); Red Garland (piano); Art Taylor (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Michael Gold; Rudy Van Gelder; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Hackensack, NJ (01/10/1958-05/23/1958); New Jersey (01/10/1958-05/23/1958); Van Gelder Studios, Hackensack, NJ (01/10/1958-05/23/1958). Author: Rudy Van Gelder. Photographer: Joe Alper. Recorded in the late-1950s, the John Coltrane of BLACK PEARLS is not the shining, legendary beacon of free jazz he eventually became by the mid-'60s. At the time of PEARLS, Coltrane was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and this was one of his solo ventures. Like many Prestige discs of this period, it's a straight-ahead hard-bop jam session. Featuring sterling accompaniment by Red Garland (also then with Davis) on piano and Donald Byrd's crackling trumpet, PEARLS displays Coltrane's surging sheets-of-sound approach in full flower. As is often the case with an artist as prolific as John Coltrane, not every release can be considered as essential. Black Pearls seems a bit ambiguous when placed in a more historical context. It was only three days later that Coltrane participated not as a leader, but rather a member, of the Miles Davis Sextet that recorded "Stella By Starlight" and "On Green Dolphin Street." ...

| | James Reese Europe CD (1999)
Portrait In Black And White
$14.39 With the exception of singer/comedian Bert Williams and a few obscure gospel groups, James Reese Europe and his orchestra were the first black musicians to ever record. Europe's Society Orchestra cut eight numbers during 1913-14, several years before the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. It would be inaccurate to call that music ...
| | Godley & Creme Images CD (1998) (Import) Australia
Portrait In Black And White
$10.99 IMAGES is a 14-track release by Godley & Creme. After splitting from English pop outfit 10cc in the mid-'70s, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme put out a string of eccentric but stylish pop albums that yielded a number of hit singles in Europe. However, Godley & Creme often got bogged down in self-consciously clever experimentation when making their albums (for example, Consequences began as a two-song single but spiraled into a triple album), and this experimentation could cause the best tracks on these albums to get buried. Thus, Images is a welcome way to sample the duo's hits as well as the well-crafted pop songs that were often overlooked on their albums. The highlight is the international smash hit "Cry," a lush ballad about heartbreak that puts aside cleverness and sonic trickery to create an accessible song with true emotional power. Other highlights include "An Englishman in New York," a 10cc-styled tune that explores the Big Apple through the eyes of weary and bewildered foreigner, and "My Body the Car," a catchy tune whose rhythmic background track consists entirely of studio-based manipulations of the human voice. "Wide Boy" is another engaging track, a surprisingly hard-rocking putdown of a romantic rival that features some spirited sax playing. Unfortunately, Images omits a few important tracks despite its generous running time; the most notable omission is "Snack Attack," the group's 1981 hit. Also, the eccentric humor that informs many of tracks may turn off the casual listener ("The Party" is a sarcastic putdown of entertainment-biz gatherings that will either tickle the listener's funny bone or drive them to distraction with its lack of pop hooks), but Images remains the best way to sample the career of Godley & Creme. ~ Donald A.
