Moving away from the gorgeously skewed guitar pop of Felt (whose Television influence has been a bit overstated), Lawrence Hayward -- just Lawrence if you please -- released this debut album under the Denim moniker in 1992. Those expecting the elegant guitar figures of old were in for quite a surprise. Sweet and crunchy rhythm guitars and goofy synthesizers were the new order of the day, as was a stream of lyrical vitriol. The beguiling eight-minute "The Osmonds" runs down a list of everything an English boy could encounter in the '70s, from velvet flares to the IRA, and ends with a nod to David Essex's "Rock On." The '70s actually hold up pretty well under Lawrence's critical gaze, particularly considering his passing shots in "Middle of the Road" at the usually revered Stones, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, and spliffs -- or his outright hostility in "I'm Against the Eighties," which focuses on "winklepicker kids Mary Chain" and "Duran Duran fake makeup boys." ~ Erik Hage
Back In Denim was recorded and mixed across a two year period on Lawrence's return to London. It was finally completed in July 1992, and for the first time in his career, Lawrence found himself signed to a major label via Boys Own, a dance label operating through London Records. The album was produced by John Leckie although completed by Lawrence with Brian O'Shaughnessy, Leckie having allegedly been driven to complete distraction by Lawrence who he described as madder and more impossible than anyone he'd worked with including Spector, Lennon and Syd Barrett. Back In Denim was unveiled to the music press before Christmas 1992 and received the most astonishing reviews at the time. 10 tracks. Cherry Red.Q (p.125) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[Time] has been remarkably kind to BACK IN DENIM, its epic, highly melodic sweep framing some of the most acute writing this side of vintage Lou Reed." Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It can be argues that this was the first salvo in the Britpop boom that followed....BACK IN DENIM remains bold pop eccentricity to cherish." Back In Denim CD music
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" ...

Back In Denim music CDs
$17.15 Fronted by Washington Post contributor Eric Brace, Last Train Home -- D.C.'s very own roots rock troupe -- surfs a number of subgenres with ease on the highly likable Bound Away. Ten members strong, LTH ably brings forth charging rockers like "Marlene" -- a tune Brace salvaged from his days in the Linemen -- and pensive, seminal weepers like Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You," but the group really hits its stride with original material. Be it the poignant "Hendersonville," a tune Brace reportedly wrote after visiting the gravesite of Johnny Cash and his spouse June Carter Cash, or the organ-laden charm of "Flipping Quarters," a pay-phone heartbreaker -- these songs are deeply emotional and inventive with flourishes of trumpet and pedal steel. Although Last Train Home's cover of Paul Kelly's classic obscurity "To Her Door" doesn't quite match the greatness of the original, the band deserves bonus points for giving new life to one of the best break-up/make-up songs ever penned. ~ John D. Luerssen
Last Train Home continues to grow in unexpected and musically profound ways with its fourth full-length CD, "Bound Away." It features the band's globally acclaimed alt-country sound, but also shows more varied influences at work. The record's emotional centerpiece, "Hendersonville" is lead singer and songwriter Eric Brace's stunning tribute to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, one that avoids the potential pitfalls of tribute songs, and stands alone as a fully realized work. There's a deep sense of place in these songs. From the howling dogs of East Nashville in "Dogs on the East Side," to the farm and fields of "They Dance Real Close There," to the Arkansas train in "Marlene," ...
