Australian Legends, Vol. 2
$38.19 The fourth full-length by the Flower Travellin' Band, 1971's SATORI, is a buried treasure of hard rock that resurfaced via reissue in the mid '00s to serious critical plaudits. Virtually unknown in North America and Europe for decades--except to serious stoner metal fans and collectors--the Flower Travellin' Band artistically peaked with this five-track monster, an opus that cast the quartet as the Japanese Black Sabbath. Finding the common ground between Sabbath and Can, SATORI's first two tracks stand up with any recordings in both psychedelic and metal history. "Part I" features fuzz chords backing singer Joe Yamanaka's memorably satisfying, Tarzan-esque vocal hook while "Part II" foregrounds guitarist Hideki Ishima's serpentine East-meets-West leads. The album is largely instrumental--with Yamanaka making occasional vocal cameos in Ishima's electric froth--but remains an epic distillation of the era when heavy psych morphed into metal. Flower Travelling Band was Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin meeting Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath at the Ash Ra Temple. Simply put, they played ...
| | Cut Copy Bright Like Neon Love CD (2004)
Australian Legends, Vol. 2
$10.09 The debut album, 'Bright Like Neon Love', sees garage rock and melodic electronics married perfectly together. Imagine Sonic Youth taking on the Pet Shop Boys, or Daft Punk conducting New Order. Romantic notions are offered in 'Future', a sprightly example of French touch electro pop as played by New Order, with low, dispassionate vocals evocative of half-remembered nostalgia. Indeed, the album is characterised by a hazy affection for teenage days gone by. The new romantic disco of 'Saturdays' offers the age-old conundrum of yearning for someone who doesn't reciprocate your affections, and 'Saturdays (Reprise)' is like an updated soundtrack to the sublime stoner flick Dazed And Confused. This is a wonderful album for the summer months ahead. 2005.
Cut Copy: Dan Whitford (vocals, guitars, synthesizer, bass guitar, drums). Personnel: Dave Whitford (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, drum machine); Tim Hoey (guitar); Mitchell Scott (drums). Audio Mixers: Julien Delfaud; Jean-François Dominguez; Philippe Zdar. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Paris, France; Dan's Bedroom; Soft Centre Studio; The Meeting Room At The Back Of Dad's Office. The Australian dance-pop group Cut Copy, fronted by multi-instrumentalist/DJ/graphic designer Dan Whitford, ends their stellar debut album with "A Dream," a mellow come down from a record scattershot with retro-dance and rock ideas fitted together with ebullient grooves. Perhaps it would have been better served as an introduction to what is such a free flowing, unrestrained electronic dance record. Bright Like Neon Love -- and by extension Whitford -- is so enamored with simple ideals of dance music, it feels like a dreamy, unconscious state of hypnotic rhythms designed purely for easy listening. Conversely, in no way does this strong rookie effort ever really test the listener -- rarely does Whitford expand beyond the confines of catchy synth loops and simplistic, manipulated vocals -- but as a perfectionist of the pop music craft, any one of these nine main tracks (there are two interludes; and "That Was Just a Dream" and "Zap Zap" are really just one song) could ...
