| | Gino Vannelli Ultimate Collection CD (2000) (Import) Holland; Netherlands; 32bit Remastered
Dedalo 2006 CD music
$36.79 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
This huge 37 song, digitally remasterd compilation, ULTIMATE COLLECTION, features rare and live versions of Gino Vannelli's hit songs.
The Ultimate Collection is not a hyperbolic title for Hip-O's 18-track collection spanning Gino Vannelli's hit-making years. Vannelli first hit the charts in 1974 with "People Gotta Move" and last charted with 1987's "Wild Horses." Counting those two songs, he had ten chart hits -- and all but one of them ("The Longer You Wait," which just barely scraped the Top 100) are on this disc. The collection doesn't follow chronological order, but that turns out not to be a liability, because his music was fairly consistent and therefore flows nicely from era to era. The biggest hits -- 1978's "I Just Wanna Stop" and 1981's "Living Inside Myself" -- hold up the best, revealing themselves as soft-rock classics, but much of this music is pleasingly in the same spirit as those two hits. When Vannelli rocks a little harder, as on the horse-themed pair "Appaloosa" and "Wild Horses" (where he adopts Elvis mannerisms), the results aren't quite as convincing, but they're not embarrassments, either. Any way you look at it, though, The Ultimate Collection is exactly what it says it is: the definitive overview of Vannelli's career. Fans of late-'70s and early-'80s soft rock, traditionally one of the most overlooked eras of pop history, will find this quite enjoyable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Laura Pausini From The Inside CD (2002)
Dedalo 2006 music CDs
$9.65 Italian pop star Laura Pausini's first English LP, From the Inside, is a guilty pleasure for any closeted fan of easy-listening pop (Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Backstreet Boys). The album kicks off with the glorious "I Need Love," a song that earned her U.S. exposure when the ABC daytime drama All My Children used it as a love theme. Other highlights include "Every Day Is a Monday," a Europop mainstream song laced with a wah-wah guitar, and the Dion-like "Without You." Pausini is clearly influenced by Dion. Her voice doesn't soar to the heights that Dion reaches, but she comes close in songs such as "If That's Love" and "Every Day Is a Monday." Like most albums filled with love songs, "surrender" is a theme throughout From the Inside, especially in the funky ballad "Do I Dare" and the Europop "Surrender." This is one album to surrender to. ~ Christina Fuoco
Personnel: Laura Pausini (background vocals); Michael Landau (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, sitar); Dorian Cheah (guitar, programming); John Shanks, Russ Desalvo, Rusty Anderson, Riccardo Galardini, Adam Phillips, Carl Sturken (guitar); Ramon Stagnaro, Tim Pierce (acoustic guitar); ...

| | Dashboard Confessional Places You Have Come To Fear The Most CD (2001)
Dedalo 2006 CD music
$10.99 It will always be a difficult gambit writing intelligent, heartrending indie-rock guitar ballads wrought with agony without resorting to pretension, syrupy self-pity, or both. Dashboard Confessional manages to avoid such pitfalls with insightful, poignantly etched stories of the end of love and the edge of love, elegantly playing with words while keeping hackneyed lines and cornball moments at bay. DC's second album, THE PLACES YOU HAVE COME TO FEAR THE MOST, continues the Vagrant label's ascent into the forefront of earnest, emotional indie rock.
Dashboard Confessional is actually the vehicle for the musings of one man, Chris Carrabba. The frontman for at least two Florida rock bands, he derived the name from a line in one of his songs. Carrabba wears his heart on his sleeve on pleading, stirring break-up songs like "The Good Fight" ("claimed you ...
