| | Shaggy Dog DVD (2006) Full Frame; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
2006 Glitter Awards movie DVD
$7.75 Directed by Brian Robbins (VARSITY BLUES, THE PERFECT SCORE), this updated spin on THE SHAGGY DOG and THE SHAGGY D.A. features Tim Allen as Dave Douglas, a Deputy District Attorney who spends way too much time at the office and way too little time with his family. His son, Joe (Spencer Breslin), feels completely misunderstood, and his wife, Rachel (Kristin Davis), feels like a single parent. To make matters worse, his teenage daughter, Carly (Zena Gray), considers Douglas the enemy because he is representing a pharmaceutical company, Grant and Strickland, in their case against her social studies teacher, who is accused of burning down their lab to protest animal testing. Douglas' life changes in an instant when animal-loving Carly brings home a friendly shaggy dog that bites the dog-disliking D.A.
What Douglas doesn't know is that the dog has a secret. This Tibetan wonder dog is 300 years old, as smart as a human, and as playful as a pup. Soon, Douglas is exhibiting canine tendencies himself - a heightened sense of smell, a tendency to growl at opposing counsel in court, and an overwhelming urge ...

2006 Glitter Awards video
$10.05 A documentary that manages to tug at many different emotions, PORTRAITS OF A NAKED LADY DANCER offers a glimpse of life as an exotic dancer. Travelling to Washington, DC, director Deborah Rowe speaks to a selection of ladies who ply their trade in the clubs of the city. Rowe had attempted to fund previous film projects by stripping to earn money, so was perfectly placed to draw out intimate testimonials from her subjects. Zoe and Jessica are the two girls whom Rowe primarily focuses on, and the duo tell remarkably different stories about their time in the industry. What makes the film even more fascinating is the five year gap in filming, with Rowe returning to her subjects after a lengthy hiatus to see how their attitudes have changed towards ...

2006 Glitter Awards review
$14.85 The kindhearted Bob and Dorothy DeBolt are the subjects of this documentary from 1977, which takes a look at their lives as they attempt to raise 19 kids. Six of the children come from Bob and Dorothy's previous marriages, but the rest are all handicapped children that the DeBolt's have adopted. Director John Korty lets his camera's loose on the family, and provides a touching film that debunks a lot of myths about the physically disabled, presenting them as survivors who go about their day in much the same way as their able-bodied counterparts. Never sinking into condescension, Korty's film follows the kids as they undertake their daily routines, while also enjoying ...

| | They Were Expendable/Flying Leathernecks DVD (2006)
2006 Glitter Awards movie DVD
$7.89 Two classic World War II films combine on this 2-Pack.
THEY WERE EXPENDABLE: John Ford's poetic adaptation of William White's book about a PT boat squadron in the South Pacific during World War II may be the best feature film on the war in that theater and is considered by some scholars, including British director Lindsay Anderson, as Ford's greatest work. Just before the outbreak of the war, Lt. John Brickley (Robert Montgomery) is assigned to take his Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron to Manila Bay to defend against a possible Japanese attack in the Philippines. Once there, he finds that the top brass, amused by the idea that the small crafts can be of use in combat, relegates the PT boat to messenger duty. Angered by that reaction, Brickley and his crew must wait for the war to begin to show what they can do. When it does, they shoot down three Japanese planes during an attack on their base, but when the base is closed Brick's squadron is reassigned to Bataan, where they once again are ordered to run messages, and Brickley's fiery executive officer, Lt. Rusty Ryan (John Wayne), fed up with such meaningless duty, asks to be transferred to a destroyer. The embodiment of Milton's tag that "they also serve who stand and wait," Ford's elegiac film pays tribute to all who donned a uniform during the war, whatever their role. Montgomery, who shared in the film's direction, gives the best noncomic performance of his career as the evenhanded CO. But in a visually arresting film ...
