Bassist François Moutin and drummer Louis Moutin are twins and aspiring jazz heavyweights from France. (François relocated to New York in 1996.) Power Tree follows up a disc they co-led as the Moutin Quartet in the mid-'90s. François returned to Paris for the 2000 session, joining his brother as well as pianist Baptiste Trotignon and tenor/soprano saxophonist Sylvain Beuf on nine splashy, involved compositions. Louis Moutin penned three of them: the intricate 5/4 "Free Climbing," the energetic swinger "A Batons Rompus," and the closing, funk-fusiony "Song for a Cat." François brought in the elegant ballad "Flying Bridge," while the edgy "Africa" (in a 15/8 triplet feel) and the heated, Michael Brecker-esque "Toutes Directions" are brotherly co-creations. François Moutin also arranged three songs by French singer Georges Brassens; Sylvain Beuf turns in a fine soprano cadenza on "Je M'Suis Fait Tout P'Tit," engages Louis Moutin in a fierce tenor/drum dialogue on "Les Copains D'Abord," then yields the floor to Trotignon's galloping piano on "Le Gorille." (The latter two songs are performed as a medley.) Both brothers combine prodigious technique and flexible, passionate feel. François Moutin's bass chops are practically unparalleled; his facility in the highest register allows him to double melodies and sound almost like a guitar. ~ David R. Adler
