While the beats here don't exactly break new ground (several, in fact, are directly reminiscent of tracks from PURPLE HAZE), Cam'ron's command of the mic still impresses. Whether reeling off gangsta narratives ("He Tried to Play Me"), digs at Jay-Z ("You Gotta Love It"), or oddly detailing his irritable bowel syndrome ("I.B.S."), Cam'ron has a witty, quick-tongued approach that can truly dazzle. While not the masterpiece many were expecting, KILLA SEASON still contains plenty to satisfy more than just Dipset fans.
In the two years following his critically acclaimed release PURPLE HAZE, rapper Cam'ron garnered as much attention for his off-stage antics as he did for his music. But 2006's KILLA SEASON proves that the leader of the Dipset click has been up to more than getting carjacked and dissing other MCs; the album finds the artist expertly brandishing the highly honed skills listeners have come to appreciate from previous efforts.

After leaving Mott the Hoople in early 1975, Ian Hunter quickly threw himself into recording this eponymous solo debut. Not surprisingly, it contains a lot of the glam rock charm of Hunter's old group: "The Truth, the Whole Truth, Nothing But the Truth" and "I Get So Excited" are fist-pumping tunes that combine punchy hard rock riffs with intelligent lyrics in a manner similar to Mott the Hoople's finest moments. However, Ian Hunter pulls off this grandiose sound without the overtly ornate production that defined the final Mott the Hoople albums because Mick Ronson's cleverly crafted arrangements manage to create a big wall of sound without utilizing a huge amount of instruments or overdubs. As a result, Ian Hunter's lyrics shine through in each song and show off his totally personalized mixture of attitude and intelligence: the legendary and oft-covered "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" is a cheeky, clever exploration of rock & roll's ability to corrupt the innocent, and "Boy" is a critique of a rocker who has allowed his pretensions to overpower his heart (many say this tune was aimed at fellow star and onetime Mott the Hoople producer David Bowie). Another highlight is "It Ain't Easy When You Fall," a moving tribute to a fallen friend that gracefully builds from delicate verses into a soaring chorus. The end result is a memorable debut album that gives listeners their hard rock fix and manages to engage their brains at the same time. Anyone interested in the finest moments of 1970s glam rock should give this classic a spin. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

DAVINA SOWERS - Vocals/Piano Powerhouse Davina Sowers, hit the Midwest scene in February, 2005 and she hasn't looked back since. It didn't take her long after moving here from Key West, FL to start making a name for herself. As she puts it, "I have a fan base already that doesn't realize they're fans yet!" With great vocals and piano, she commands attention on stage and leaves everyone smiling. She can belt it out with grit of Joplin, or bring down the house with melodic phrasing that reminds one of Bonnie Raitt. Davina has been performing since the age of 5, with support of an extremely musically involved family. Sowers is a classically trained pianist with years of experience in piano performance. Davina has already shared the stage with Little Feet, Buddy Guy, Elvin Bishop, The Lamont Cranston Band, and The Blues Brothers, among others, at venues such as the new House of Blues in Altantic City, NJ and the Bayfront Blues Festival in Duluth, MN.MICHAEL CARVALE - Upright/Electric Bass Standup/electric bassist and vocalist, Michael Carvale, was born in Trenton, NJ.
