| | Best Of Hip Hop CD - Import
Though the word "best" in Madacy's Ultimate 16: Best of Hip Hop is actually code for "old-school tracks that most people have heard before, even if as sampled content," the album does offer some fun, good songs, including Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)," the Sugarhill Gang's "Apache," and Naughty by Nature's "Feel Me Flow." Unfortunately, there are also a few things, such as Snow's "Girl, I've Been Hurt" and Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," that could have been left off, especially since artists like Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, 2Pac, and Dr. Dre are all left out (and even if the record's creators are sticking to East Coast rap, there's no reason why Public Enemy, Kool Moe Dee, and N.W.A. shouldn't be on there). Ultimate 16: Best of Hip Hop is definitely incomplete, and a misnomer at that, but, given the price and the level of pickiness/attentiveness of the consumer, it might satiate a fleeting hip-hop need. ~ Marisa Brown Best Of Hip Hop Songs | 1. | Whoomp! | | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Best Of Hip Hop album
$8.89 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches ...
| | Best Of The Gap Band CD (1995)
Best Of Hip Hop CD music
$11.99 A collection from the Mercury funk lineup that covers the hits from the first five Gap Band albums. Every major hit that they had is included here. What one might notice is that all of the major hits ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Burn Rubber on Me," "Early in the Morning," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance") all sound surprisingly similar. This may or may not be a large surprise to everyone, but the bright note about their similarity is that the basic riffs and rhythms that they all use are extremely catchy. The energy that the Gap Band exudes in the midst of producing a song is stunning, and this compilation displays that to the fullest extent. For a basic introduction to the forms of funk that the Gap Band followed, this album would certainly suit any given listener. For those who only need one Gap Band album in their collection, this one also fits the bill perfectly. For die-hard fans who ...
