The fourth album by New Jersey emo outfit Thursday, CITY BY THE LIGHT DIVIDED shows a striking new maturity. A loosely knit concept album partially inspired by a car accident that claimed the life of an old friend of lead singer Geoff Rickly, the album has a haunted, emotionally-charged lyrical mood that's matched by the wider stylistic range of the songs. First single, "Counting 5-4-3-2-1," is the most immediately accessible song the band has yet offered, closer to the melodic indie rock of Death Cab For Cutie than to the cathartic post-hardcore of the group's earlier records. As a whole, CITY BY THE LIGHT DIVIDED sounds like the work of an older, wiser band moving beyond the limitations of their early style.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Entertainment Weekly (p.136) - "Fridmann guides screamo's best band into stronger and more eclectic territory -- and to their crowning achievement." -- Grade: A- Q (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] mightily heavy and punky album....The band also pay tribute to the epic, atmospheric glumness of The Cure." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.57) - "Atmospheric interludes, samples and strings add a far-reaching scope to their music that skillfully blends the fury and passion they're renowned for with a graceful, cinematic scope." This ain't your average bleeder There are gems to treasure that are (neatly) on this disc to gamble. Their indie roots are well-kempt throughtout this disc's ideology but this isn't another 'War All The Time' that you once grow to hear. This takes listen after listen to grow on you. 'Don't just sit and take off'. Yep. It's that complex. Submitted by Hmmm ... (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not too shabby This cd was pretty good, but they made a bad choice in picking the first single. Counting Down 5,4,3,2,1 is one of the weaker tracks on the album. My favorites are Running from the Rain, Telegraph Avenue Kiss, The Lovesong Writer, and Into the Blinding Light. Submitted by Kyle (Statesboro, Ga, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I just want to point out one thing... This CD is alright, since I live in NJ I've pretty much seen these dudes from start point to where they are now.... this isn't their best outing but its good.
I just want to point out that Thursday was NEVER screamo, and anybody who calls them screamo obviously got into that "genre" when it became a MTV buzzword. I'm not even going to begin into the "These bands are screamo, these bands aren't" because it is a waste of time.
Just saying, definately NOT screamo. Never. Thank you. Submitted by FantasticDude (New Jersey) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

City By The Light Divided album
$16.45 Valerie Smith & Becky BullerHERE'S A LITTLE SONGA year and a half in the making, Here\'s a Little Song was a major step of faith. While the brother duet tradition remains strong on today's Bluegrass circuit with groups like the Gibson Brothers and Daley and Vincent, one rarely hears a sister duet act. That is, until now. \"We certainly aren\'t out to send the Bluegrass world spinning sideways,\" said Becky. \"We just both happen to be big fans of classic duet acts such as the Louvin and Everly Brothers,\" said Becky. \"Our goal was to channel their sound into these new songs with stark arrangements that make the melodies, harmonies and stories the focal points of our presentation,' she adds. Although not blood sisters, Smith & Buller have been performing together for years in the band Liberty Pike and have honed their skills and timing to be as tight as any two siblings.\"In April of \'06, just after we finished up recording Val\'s Bluegrass Gospel album, Wash Away Your Troubles, Valerie had to undergo vocal surgery,\" said Becky. \"Later that year she was healed and singing great so we made all our plans to begin the duet record,\" she recalls. \"Then in February of \'07, we found out she had to have a second vocal surgery,\" Becky continued. \"Our sessions were scheduled for April at Paul Hopkins\' Studio near Shelbyville, Tenn. , and Valerie wanted us to go ahead. So, in crazy faith, we did just that, getting most of our music recorded without any idea if Valerie would ever be able to talk again, let alone sing. \"That step of faith worked. This past January, less than a year after that second surgery, the duo were back in the studio recording their vocals. 'It was truly a miracle,' says Valerie. 'I can\'t begin to thank all the promoters and fans who hung in there with me during the grueling recovery process. \"While this album marks Valerie's return to health, it also marks Becky\'s debut as a producer. \"I especially need to thank Becky, who I\'m sure was nervous about her first production ever coming to fruition,\" Valerie laughs. \"I wanted to give Becky this opportunity because I\'m a big fan of her musical sensibilities, so much so that several years ago I asked her to be my bandleader. The logical next step was to give her a chance to direct traffic in the studio. \"Becky is grateful for the opportunity. \"If Valerie had given me a choice, I know I would\'ve chickened out,\" she says. \"But as usual, she believed in me so much I had to rise to the occasion in spite of myself. \"Both ladies felt confident with the fabulous Tim Roberts behind the board. He's one of the most patient souls I\'ve ever run into,' Becky recalls. 'He and our mastering engineer John Eberle talked me through the technical end of things. 'And Alan O\'Bryant!' she gushes. ' we did the overdubs ...
