Yet another album by German guitar superstar Axel Rudi Pell, Mystica delivers...well, pretty much what every previous Axel Rudi Pell album has delivered. Pell is comfortable enough with his impressive chops that he doesn't have to do the whole God of the Fretboard routine that so many European metal guitarists are saddled with, so his albums are refreshingly light on the pyrotechnics. He does have a fondness for the pretentiously titled instrumental, however, so here listeners have "Haunted Castle Serenade (Opus #4 Grazioso e Aggresso)" and "The Mysterious Return (Intro)." Otherwise, this is utterly straightforward, by the book melodic hard rock in the '80s poodle-hair style, complete with former Hardline singer Johnny Gioeli's pleasant but utterly anonymous vocals. If you still treasure your Scorpions and Rainbow albums, Mystica is sure to please, but those whose taste in metal has progressed beyond 1987 ...

The Wrens were a woefully under-recorded doo wop group from the Bronx led by singer Bobby Mansfield. Counting unreleased material and alternate takes, the group only recorded 14 tracks for George Goldner's Rama and Gee labels between 1954 and 1956. Their one hit, "Come Back My Love," from 1955, is collected here on this brief set, along with quality cuts like "What Makes You Do the Things You Do," the sprightly "Betty Jean," and "Hey Girl." Also here is one of the two tracks Mansfield recorded for Gee while backed by the Supremes (no, not the Motown group), "Reckless" (which is mislisted here -- as it usually is -- as "Wreckless"). The group's entire recorded output is available from Collectables under the title Best of the Wrens (again, only about 14 tracks), so it really makes no sense to seek out this ...
