| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Esto Fue Que Trajo El Barco music CDs
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," ...

Esto Fue Que Trajo El Barco album
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Expósito, Ramón Perelló, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso (who makes a guest appearance), Maria Teresa Vera, Miguel Matamoros (who composed the title track), and others. Most are Cuban ballads. Guests such as Veloso, Paquito D'Rivera, Pancho Terry, Tata Güines, and El Niño Josele fall by on different tracks. And while the tunes are top-shelf and the guests make this a very special and historic occasion, it is the unusual dynamic and the integrity with which it is employed that makes this set so unique. Valdés' style is an ...

| | Congotronics 2: Buzz 'N' Rumble From The Urb 'N' Jungle CDs (2006) (Import) With DVD; Belgium
Esto Fue Que Trajo El Barco CD music
$16.45 When long-running Bazombo trance ensemble Konono No. 1 first thrilled Western ears to the sounds of amplified scrapheap percussion on the first installment of CONGOTRONICS (2005), it was a revelatory moment for audiences whose appreciation of African pop rarely ventured past the more obvious World Music platitudes. The series followup, CONGOTRONICS 2: BUZZ `N' RUMBLE FROM THE URB `N' JUNGLE, focuses on a handful of artists from the Kinsasha-based scene, all putting their individual stamp on electronically-treated percussion. From the majestic bass drones of "Koyile Nyeka Nyeka" by Kasai Allstars to the polyrhythmic concatenations of Masanka Sankayi's "Le Laboureur," a stunning variety of approaches is employed. And despite its seemingly distortion-fixated resemblance to the outer reaches of Western experimental music, this is, first and foremost, celebratory music with a joyous life-affirming purpose that belies the daily struggles encountered ...
| | Zero 7 Garden CD (2006)
Esto Fue Que Trajo El Barco music CDs
$13.69 On the up-tempo number "Throw It All Away," Sia's soulful croon ruminates on loss while a plaintive brass melody echoes the laid-back sophistication of '60s lounge pop. Indeed, many of the production details give the album a similar, light-as-air effervescence. On the acoustic folk of "Left Behind," Jose Gonzalez's languid vocals provide the perfect counterpoint to the spare guitar melodies, resembling the somber beauty of Nick Drake's finest work.
In embarking on their quest toward crafting lush, electronic pop songs, one can forgive U.K. downtempo duo Zero 7 for perhaps taking the path less traveled. In the span of ...
