Just this side of a classic, El Juicio is yet another frenetic volume in the continuing series of classics produced by Willie Colón and Hector Lavoe during one of the most fruitful partnerships in Latin music history. With Cosa Nuestra and La Gran Fuga (The Big Break) already under their belt, and a few years of honing their material on the road, Colón and Lavoe produced a pair of classics on El Juicio, the eight-minute "Timbalero," which approximates the sonic experience of a barnyard parade down 110th Street, and the six-minute "Aguanile," both of which should have come with caveats for all but the most conditioned salsa dancers. Nunca me compré este disco antes por lo mala que era la masterización original. Ahora la remasterización lo trae de vuelta y tengo que recomendarlo con los ojos cerrados. Musicalmente, es una joya. Si tuviera que comprarme sólo un disco de Willie Colón con Hector Lavoe, serÃa este. Sin desperdicios!

People need to hear this album. Willie Colon is pulling from all over the Caribbean, and probably from Brazil. Lavoe's voice is extremely powerful here, and even though I don't understand that much Spanish, he frequently makes me laugh. The sequencing of the songs works beautiful, so that songs with different moods and feels balance each other out. There's a real free-wheeling quality to the proceedings, and yet the musicianship is solid.

In the `60s, the South African-born trumpeter, producer, and composer Hugh Masekela played a pivotal role in introducing African music to western audiences. HOPE is a live album that captures Masekela performing in D.C. with an accomplished, all-African band in 1993.
