SPRINGTIME CAN KILL YOU is the follow-up to ex-Be Good Tanya singer-songwriter Jolie Holland's critically acclaimed 2004 release ESCONDIDA. Haunting, gorgeous, and meticulously crafted, the album shows Holland maturing by leaps and bounds as a writer and performer.
Holland draws from the full spectrum of Americana, weaving threads of country, folk, blues, and gospel into a shimmering tapestry that is uniquely her own. The album is intimate and familiar, yet fresh and surprising; the credit for its impact goes almost entirely to Holland's compositions, which float like dreams dreamt in the depth of a summer night. Every aspect of SPRINGTIME--from the understated arrangements to Holland's charmingly idiosyncratic vocals--rings true.Rolling Stone (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Holland's voice is a thing of wonder -- languorous but with a sweetness that makes even the saddest sentiments comforting." Spin (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "With cockeyed portraits of bruised romance, she sustains deep suspense thanks to languid enunciations of every stretched vowel." Entertainment Weekly (p.83) - "[H]er band breathes along like a ventilator with brushed drums, pump organ, lap steel and horns. Proof folk music shouldn't just conjure the past." No Depression (p.135) - "[T]he country-tinged "Moonshiner' is shot through with bittersweet slide guitar. The title track, despite its fatal implications, is a light and lively jazz tune, propelled by flittering cymbals, quick strums, and an air of barely suppressed agitation." Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[S]he always offsets hillbilly hangdog victimhood with a raised eyebrow of humour or some strangely uplifting musical moment." Springtime Can Kill You album
$9.99 Most know Jolie Holland as a member of Vancouver's the Be Good Tanyas. Catalpa is her first album, but it wasn't recorded as such. It had been a demo recording passed around to fans until Neume reviewed it on the internet. The venerable upstart label Anti has given it the proper release it deserves. Holland is a native Texan, and it shows in her songwriting. Her images are rich, though stark and Gothic; they sound transposed. While her worldview is mostly modern, its articulation is rooted in a mythical, metonymic America that ceased to exist long before Greil Marcus ever thought about writing Invisible Republic. Catalpa is a place of scribbles and ciphers. Holland's songs are etched out of encounters and experiences that are mercurial, fleeting. As evidenced by "Alley Flowers," a love song, the present and the past intermingle, where street ...

Springtime Can Kill You album
$9.09 Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch, Dave Schultz and Bill Inglot.
Maybe it's because "60's Rock Party" is such a vague concept, but Millennium 60's Rock Party is the least cohesive installment in Rhino's century series, Millennium 60's Rock Party. A "60's Rock Party" follows no particular genre or style, apparently, since the disc flip-flops between British Invasion, soul, psychedelia, garage ...
| | Bran Van 3000 Discosis CD (2001) (Import) Canada
Springtime Can Kill You CD music
$17.09 The second album from eclectic Canadian artists Bran Van 3000 was produced by Mike D of the Beastie Boys and features guest contributions from Curtis Mayfield, Big Daddy Kane, Momus, and Youssou N'Dour. Tracks include "Astounded", "Loop Me", "Montreal", and the title track.
One of the most unheralded and underappreciated CDs of 2001, Bran Van 3000's Discosis perfectly synthesizes the band's equal urges toward dance music, pop melodies, and practical jokes. Where the Montréal-based collective's first album, Glee, had bounced rather erratically from mood to mood depending on which members were featured on which track, Discosis finds everyone on the same page, resulting in a disarmingly cohesive album with something for everyone. ...

| | Epoxies My New Word CD (2007)
Springtime Can Kill You CD music
$7.35 Portland, Oregon's Epoxies are the queens and kings of the post-millennial new wave revival, infusing their take on early-'80s synth pop with sharp, punky hooks and smarter songwriting than most of their counterparts can manage. My New World takes the bratty pop-punk with electronics sound, perfected on earlier albums The Epoxies and Stop the Future, and matures it into an equally retro but far more sophisticated form of pop. Just as many of the original new wave kids grew into more mainstream but no less catchy songsmiths, the Epoxies are unafraid to tackle ...
