| | Ray Wylie Hubbard Delerium Tremolos CD (2005)
10 Bare Essentials CD music
$13.05 It seems strange that folks like Ray Wylie Hubbard once lived such wild lives but have been able to make solid comebacks later in life. Strange, because Hubbard, on Delirium Tremolos, sounds as good as he ever has. Better yet, the album has a nice, mellow country sound, and Hubbard has discarded, for the time being, his penchant for preachy, comic songs. It doesn't hurt that the album's been produced by Gurf Morlix, nor that he's joined by great harmony singers like Patty Griffin and Eliza Gilkyson. Hubbard's choice of songs are solid too, combining deep but real lyrics ("And the rock and roll gypsies are ridin' tonight/ On the carnival strips they'll stay") with good melodies and hooks. The first three songs, "The Beauty Way," "Rock and Roll Gypsies," ...

| | Bobby Bare Moon Was Blue CD (2005)
10 Bare Essentials songs
$12.95 Veteran country singer Bobby Bare's return to solo recording after a 20-year hiatus is overseen by his son, Bobby Bare, Jr., who augments strictly traditional arrangements with off-kilter sonic flourishes and appearances from neo-country interpreters like violinist Andrew Bird and singer-songwriter Paul Burch. Bare's world-weary voice eases comfortably into a set of tried-and-true covers that spans classics like Shel Silverstein's "Ballad of Lucy Jordan," "Love Letters in the Sand," and "Am I That Easy to Forget," while Bobby Jr.'s frequently inspired production both highlights the music's familiarity and accentuates its weirdness.

| | Bobby Bare Down & Dirty...Plus CD (2006) (Import) Reissue; Australia
10 Bare Essentials CD music
$19.99 Originally released in 1979, DOWN AND DIRTY...PLUS is an expanded reissue of one of the great live albums of the entire 1970s outlaw country movement. Influenced as much by blues and rock & roll as he is by traditional country, Bobby Bare steamrollers through outdated genre descriptors on storming tunes like "Good For Nothing Blues" and "Numbers." However, Bare was also an effective ballad singer, as shown by his touching versions of "Some Days Are Diamonds" and Townes Van Zandt's heartbreaking "Tecumseh Valley."
By 1979, Bare had been recording for 25 years yet when he strapped on a Fender Telecaster and recorded a rough and rowdy ...
| | Hank Williams, Jr Pressure Is On: Original Classic Hits Vol. 7 CDs (1981)
10 Bare Essentials music CDs
$5.99 THE PRESSURE IS ON is one of Hank Williams Jr.'s best '80s albums. The regretful anthem "All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down" is almost a country version of Warren Zevon's "Detox Mansion."
On "The Coalition to Ban Coalitions," Williams does an excellent Daffy Duck imitation and comes to terms with our highly litigious society. "Some want to get rid of Fender guitars," he complains. There's also Williams Sr.'s "I Don't Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes)," done as a gorgeous duet with George Jones, and--reinforcing the family theme--the very funny "Ballad of Hank," written and co-sung by his father's old bandmate Don Helms.
This is Volume 7 of Curb's Bocephus series.

| | Whites Lifetime In The Making CD (2000)
10 Bare Essentials CD music
$9.55 Ricky Skaggs' Ceili label has quickly gained a reputation for quality recordings, and the Whites' A Lifetime in the Making is no exception. The stars of this disc are vocalist and guitarist Sharon White, vocalist and bass player Cheryl White, and vocalist and mandolinist Buck White. This album offers what listeners have come to expect from the Whites: beautiful harmony, good song choices, and great acoustic accompaniment. Jerry Douglas has produced this album with a steady hand, and also adds his always tasteful dobro playing. Songs like "Before the Prairie Met the Plow" and "Always Coming Home" will probably be described as bluegrass, but the smooth harmonies and relaxed pace seems to share more with country and folk. This folk connection is strengthened by the inclusion of songs like "Fair and Tender Ladies." This song has a lovely arrangement and includes harmony and lead vocals by Emmylou Harris. While a melancholy air occasionally ...
