Never mind the matching cowboy hats and monochromatic dress shirts, Grupo Montez de Durango turn out traditional norteno without the slightest trace of pop gloss or commercial pretense. On BORRON Y CUENTA NUEVA, Grupo Montez ply their specialty: rancheras and corridos, with the occasional cumbia and polka thrown in for good measure. There isn't a synthesizer or contemporary production flourish anywhere on the disc to detract from the simple, authentic sound of horns and acoustic guitars. In 2000, one-man band Bjorn Lynne delivered a fourth CD for the British label Cyclops. Revive is a return to more rock-based songs (as on The Void) and will be perceived as a big change to fans only acquainted with the musician's previous two efforts, the fantasy novel-derived Wolves of the Gods and Wizard of the Wind. Lynne handles lead guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum programming. Guitarist Rory McLeish adds some lead guitar on two tracks. The music here is of the very synthetic kind; square programmed drums and Jean-Michel Jarre-esque keyboards provide the backbone of these instrumental pieces. The main feature is Lynne's melodic guitar playing. He is never indulgent in the style of a guitar hero, but looks for the right touch to fit a particular song. It works well, but the music lacks the ambition of previous projects. Exit the ethereal atmospheres and the progressive rock developments, and the songs on Revive are simple and straightforward. A fair comparison would be Tangerine Dream circa Optical Race (plus lead guitar, of course). This generous CD (73 minutes) tends to be a bit too linear in the long run. Overall, it is not one of Lynne's best accomplishments. ~ François Couture
For this CD, I re-arranged and re-recorded brand new versions of some of my 'hits' from my early years.Classic Bjorn Lynne tracks such as "12th Warrior", "Space Deliria", "Bridge to the Universe", "Moongazer", "Empty Spaces" and "Niagara" have been combined with today's studio sound, live instruments, session musicians and digital recording. When the first track from this CD, "Space Deliria 2000", was made available on the internet in late 1999, it caused quite a stir, as many wrote in to express their enthusiasm over this music. That just made it even more fun for me! :-)If you already have some of my other CDs, and wonder how this CD compares to the previous ones... I would say that this CD is positive, upbeat, optimistic and more 'immediate' than some of my more darker, deeper and more thought-out music stuff from my other albums. But I'll leave it up to you to judge. This is just full-on instrumental and symphonic melodic synth-rock! Don't analyze, just pump it up. As for me personally, I had a great time making this CD. The boss at the record company Cyclops thinks it's the best CD I've ever done. I hope you'll like it, too.
