The most amazing thing about Pete Philly & Perquisite's debut record, Mind.State, is that despite the laid-back beats, the jazz saxophone, the guest appearance by Talib Kweli, the East Coast groove à la Native Tongues, is that the duo is actually from the Netherlands, and not some grimy U.S. metropolis. But both MC Pete Philly and producer/arranger Perquisite must have studied their hip-hop idols carefully, because they sound authentically American. Mind.State, which was first released in Europe in 2005, is a kind of loose concept album, with each song (minus the intro) describing an emotion that is put into context and explained by the MC's rhymes. For the most part, Pete Philly does a good job at portraying each sentiment (and this is disregarding the fact that every track except for "Relieved" has a hook that contains the song title), moving from the funky "Insomnia," which has a bassline that sounds like the pounding of tired, red eyes, to "Mellow," about being comfortably in love, to "Respect," with its clearly purposefully chosen Middle Eastern/Indian-inspired beats and lyrics about "corporations taking way more than they need." There are some discrepancies, like the suitability of the lyrics in the title track, which talk of being "torn between ups and downs" and seem more appropriate for "Conflicted" feelings, and "Cocksure," which finds Pete Philly boasting about his rhyming and sexual talents, contains the unfortunate line "lean, green, mean, rap writing machine," which should never make anyone confident in anything except perhaps the power of vegetables. Nonetheless, the MC is pretty solid, and his nicely syncopated delivery, a mix between Talib Kweli (it's no wonder he agreed to be involved in a song) and John Forté, is refreshing and fun. Even more impressive is Perquisite, who adds guest musicians on saxophone, percussion, and guitar, as well as his own piano and cello, to his chilled-out jazz beats, coming up with something that is interesting and always fits the mood of each song. European or not, Mind.State is an album that is sure to impress underground hip-hop fans on both sides of the Atlantic. ~ Marisa Brown

Das EFX -- part of EPMD's Def Squad crew, which also included K-Solo and Redman, among others -- made such a wide breakthrough in 1992 with their debut album that their hit "They Want EFX" was even referenced in the lily-white teen serial Beverly Hills 90210. That Dead Serious could have that sort of broad impact and still retain its credibility within the underground hip-hop community says something about its appeal, which was considerable. But the album wasn't just appealing; it was also enormously influential, ushering in an entirely unique rhyming flow that influenced any number of rappers, established and novice alike. What exactly the duo is rapping about is anyone's guess. One thing is for sure: their lyrics are about as far removed from hardcore realism as they could possibly be, and although there are certain elements of boasting, it is so cut up and contorted that it never sounds like there's even a hint of the humdrum here. The Beatnuts' first full-length album is as pure a document of raw, hardcore hip-hop circa 1994 as is possible to get. No pop hooks, no slick production, no ballads or lyrics about money and girls. Main Source's debut album, Breaking Atoms, is one of the quintessential cult classics in hip-hop history. Underappreciated compared to peers like A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, or even Brand Nubian, the album probably doesn't get wider acclaim because it was recorded for the ill-fated Wild Pitch label, and thus remained out of print for much of the time its reputation was spreading. Group focal point the Large Professor is a fine rapper, but the album's legend rests more on his production -- he debuts one of the most influential styles in hip-hop here, popularizing a number of now widely imitated techniques. Luckily, you don't have to know how to operate an SP-1200, or exactly what panning, chopping, and filtered basslines are, to appreciate the vibrant-sounding results. Even if Main Source's lineup had remained the same for the follow-up to Breaking Atoms, the group would've had trouble following it up. That's not all the group had working against it. Most significantly, in a very gutsy move, K-Cut and Sir Scratch opted to keep Main Source running after the departure of Large Professor, easily their greatest asset as both an MC and a producer. They replaced him with the rougher-sounding Mikey D. and didn't return with F*ck What You Think until a full three years after Breaking Atoms impacted the hip-hop world.
