| | Shys Astoria CD Shys Discography of CDs
On the evidence of the first couple of tracks of their full length debut, the California garage rockers have all the elements in place to become the left coast Strokes, or, on "Call in the Cavalry," even America's answer to the Arctic Monkeys. But as ASTORIA progresses, it's obvious the Shys have a deeper musical heritage to draw on than their 21st-century bedhead brethren. "Waiting on the Sun" conjures the Black Crowes' Stones-like sway, while "Having It Large" displays more than a passing acquaintance with '70s rockers like the Faces and the Stooges, and the subtle, layered "Resistance" would be classic rock & roll in any era.

Astoria album
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged "Myrna Loy." While there are contagious moments like "Rooting for the Plague" and the profane singalong "I Don't Want to Fuck Off Anymore," tunes like the heady "Disaster Nurse Fang" and "Dear Employer" (which is recycled but drastically stripped-down from its appearance on 2003's Down With Wilco and again boasts Jeff Tweedy) are as off-kilter as these alternative pop luminaries are likely to get. I Don't Know Who I Am may not be the Minus 5 disc fans rely on most of the time, but there's ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Astoria CD music
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes ...
| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Astoria music CDs
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning ...
| | Pere Ubu Why I Hate Women CD (2006)
Astoria songs
$10.79 Named after a hypothetical and non-existent Jim Thompson novel, Pere Ubu's 13th studio album is one of the most interesting of their long tenure, and testament to the continually replenishing spiky ingenuity of group leader (and sole original member) David Thomas. WHY I HATE WOMEN examines a living slice of dread, as expressed by nervous drums, atmospheric guitars, and Thomas's anxiety-ridden singing. The jerky rhythms and vocals of the opening number "Two Girls (One Bar)" are like opening a door and being greeted by the entirety of the early 1980s no-wave scene. Ditto the unsettling swamp-fevered "Blue Velvet," which reverberates with David Lynchian despair and desire, and the hopped-up "Caroleen," which plays like a love song for troubled adolescents, without the emo bravado.
2006 album from David Thomas and his Ubu boys, old and new. Pere Ubu have really come out fighting with Why I Hate Women, racing towards all horizons at full tilt, pushing the experimental envelope further than ever, but also tightening up their trademark avant-punk attack. The rhythm section (Ubu's ...
| | Under Byen Samme Stof Som Stof CD (2006) Digipak
Astoria album
$13.05 With the rise of groups such as Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Sigur Rós come more textured, orchestrated bands following in their footsteps. Under Byen is such a group, although lead singer Henriette Sennenvalt's fragile delivery on "Pilot" sounds as if it's Björk or PJ Harvey fronting the Sugarcubes. Delicate and yet quite intricate, the song takes on a dreamy but gritty tone as Sennenvalt guides things along à la Nico steering a Velvet Underground number. A slow, creeping song ensues titled "Den Her Sang Handler Om at Få Det Bedste Ud Af Det" which saunters along before strings and ...

| | Harden My Heart...The Best Of Quarterflash CD (1997)
Astoria music CDs
$6.49 Quarterflash's three charted singles highlight this best-of package that compiles their sturdiest material, as well as a few of their soundtrack contributions. Both "Harden My Heart" and "Find Another Fool" broke the Top 20 upon the release of their self-titled debut album in 1981, and proved to be this Oregon band's best singles. Two other songs from the album, "Critical Times" and "Right Kind of Love," appear here also, followed by the seductive rock flow of the number 14 hit "Take Me to Heart," from 1983's Take Another Picture. "Night Shift" appeared on the soundtrack of the same name which is now out of print, while the B-side to "Harden My Heart," entitled "Don't Be Lonely," surfaced on the Fast Times at Ridgemont High album, and "Make It ...

| | Drekka Extractioning CD (2005)
Astoria album
$13.25 Compiled from two earlier EPs then further revamped into a cassette release, Extractioning is a brief but compelling look into Drekka (aka Michael Anderson)'s ability with a variety of approaches, from skeletal folk to guitar-derived ambience, chopped-up snippets of psalm singing to inspired cover versions. Starting with the glowering feedback loom/fragile acoustic guitar of "Extractioning," one of Drekka's best in an openly ...
