Chicago duo the Like Young play smart pop with punk tendencies--husband and wife Amanda and Joe Ziemba split the vocal duties, and get a lot of sonic mileage out of their limited instrumentation thanks to imaginative arrangements and sophisticated production flourishes. Songs like "For Money or Love" and "All the Wrong Reasons" hint at a hardscrabble indie-rock existence, and the whole set is driven by a kind of desperate last-ditch energy that may be uncomfortable to live through but sure makes for great rock & roll.
Recording information: Chicago, IL.
The Like Young: Amanda Ziemba, Joe Ziemba.
Personnel: Amanda Ziemba (vocals, drums).

Purchase Last Secrets CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
Last Secrets album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s ...

Last Secrets songs
$17.39 Considered by many to be G.B.H.'s entry into thrash from the band's previous punk releases, No Need to Panic contains some of G.B.H.'s best music and some of its most peculiar. There's no shortage of punk fury and energy, certainly in tracks like "Makin' Whips" and "To Understand." There are also G.B.H.'s first attempts at guitar solos. But lyrically, the songs are a strange ...
| | Yoko Ono Rising CD (1995)
Last Secrets album
$11.49 For her first album in several years, Yoko Ono was joined by her son Sean Ono Lennon's trio Ima (Japanese for "now"), a trio adept at both abstract, improvisational free jazz and Sonic Youth-style noise rock. Both of these musical extremes can be found on RISING, a harrowing, autobiographical song cycle written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the time of the bombings, Ono--who grew up in Tokyo--was hiding in the Japanese countryside. Given her most sympathetic backing since the early-'70s Plastic Ono Band records, Ono delivers her most heartfelt and experimental work in over 20 ...

$44.25 | | Gourds Heavy Ornamentals CD (2006)
Last Secrets CD music
$12.45 The Gourds have been relentlessly spewing up quality records that challenge the conventions of both country and pop music with equal parts earnestness and irreverence for over a decade. Bandleaders Kevin Russell and Jimmy Smith write hyper-literate songs that challenge even the most learned grad student while retaining enough "good old boy" idioms to placate the piss-drunk yahoo tapping his mirrored shades against the end of the bar. Their eighth full-length album, Heavy Ornamentals, doesn't stray far from the "juke joint in Samuel Clemens' brain" aesthetic that drove career highs like Stadium Blitzer and Ghosts of Hallelujah into alternative country hearts around the world. Recorded all analog in order to capture every note -- mistakes are left in to add to the authenticity -- Ornamentals is both their truest and most raw release in some time. Russell provides his usual mix of heartfelt Texas poetry -- try the achingly gorgeous "Our Patriarch" -- while Smith remains the well-read deviant opining on everything from gassy roommates to a local forecaster -- "Do you think it rains when my weather girl cries/I sh*t you not it's softball size." The Gourds are peerless avatars of pop culture, referencing everything from Schoolhouse Rock! ("Decline-O-Meter") to Star Trek ("Pick and Roll") -- in the ...
