(3 Customer Reviews)
The Indiana quartet Murder By Death augments its often raucous barroom ballads with cello, which gives its often dark, Nick Cave-like songs an aura of sinister drawing room gentility. Blending alt country with an old-world feel, songs like the uproarious "Dead Men and Sinners," which sounds like vintage Pogues, and the driving rocker "Sometimes the Line Walks You," contrast with the ominous, downbeat "The Devil Drives" and "The Big Sleep," both of which take justice and redemption as their themes.
Personnel: Adam Turla (vocals, guitar); Janet Morgan, J. Robbins (vocals); Sarah Balliet (cello, keyboards); Alex Schrodt (drums, percussion).
Audio Mixer: J. Robbins.
Q (p.121) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Sarah Balliet saws at her cello dementedly, with both 'One More Notch' and 'The Big Sleep' capable of rousing a whole graveyard of sinners." Alternative Press (p.202) - "The ties that bind MBD's tunes -- cello-infused rock, classical dramatic narratives, folk-rock and alt-country spirit -- serve as a robust foundation for the band's boundless musical exploration." CMJ (p.4) - "[M]ore a collection of short stories bound together with the melancholy themes that colored the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "This Indiana-based quartet play dark-hearted Southern gothic country for the 21st century." Murder By Death In Bocca Al Lupo Songs In Bocca Al Lupo Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Brilliant Yet another fantastic album from Murder By Death. With a sound all their own the band delivers another though-provoking album. Not only do the words strike a cord, but the music is like nothing else out there right now. Adding a cello to a rock band is pure genius. Submitted by Kate (Wichita, KS, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An eclectic range of music "The ties that bind MBD's tunes -- cello-infused rock, classical dramatic narratives, folk-rock and alt-country spirit -- serve as a robust foundation for the band's boundless musical exploration." Take justice and redemption, huh? I'd take a bootlick to the hide on this puppy. The band was discovered by Thursday vocalist, Geoff Rickly, who helped them get signed to Eyeball Records initially. This release is served on their own label apparently as bands like Thursday and My Chemical Romance have moved on to the majors. I don't know what's going on the flipside with this band but it's exciting to see that they remind me of Canadiana rock. I don't see too many bands that often that could pull a stunt like this that they do independently (Tent Show is part of EastWest, a family of labels that it has to offer who could afford to go indie?!) Wow-wee! Now that's an offer I could afford! Submitted by Hmmm ... (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
