Pianist David Hazeltine joins forces once again with tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander for an outstanding session. With bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth supplying the base of a solid rhythm section, Hazeltine delves into several pop songs from the 1950s and 1960s, giving them complete makeovers. Henry Mancini's slow waltz "Moon River" incorporates stop-time measures initially before settling into a driving hard bop mode. Burt Bacharach's often tediously played ballad "The Look of Love" is still played at a slow tempo, but the pianist adds an ominous sound to sections of his trio arrangement. The briskly paced scoring of Jimmy Van Heusen's
"Nancy (With the Laughing Face)" features a driving piano reminiscent of McCoy Tyner's style, as well as adding a tasty bass solo by Washington. The originals on the session are every bit as potent. The leader's "A Walk in the Park" is a demanding piece full of twists and turns, ...

The soul-jazz minded keyboardist has been a legendary pop-fusion and smooth-jazz artist for several decades, and producer Steven Dubin had been a huge smooth-jazz force for several years (working with Peter White, Richard Elliot and Najee). The two Philadelphia natives never crossed paths (despite having gone to the same high school and played the same clubs), however, until Lorber hired him to work on his album Kickin' It. This disc continues the fun, feisty and funky retro-soul vibe of that disc in an even fuller celebration of their Phillyness. Lorber is so well known for his old school Rhodes textures (which were "new school" when he first did them in the 70s) that it's nice to hear so much classy acoustic piano here, as on the seductive, horn drenched opening track "Under Wraps." Lorber uses the Rhodes as an underpinning harmony, but his ivory soloing is what makes the tune shimmer. Santa Barbara's Ataris were among the legions of pop-punk bands to emerge in the late 1990s. Like many of their contemporaries, the Ataris owe something of a debt to the Descendents and the Buzzcocks, but a large part of their sound comes out of the alternative rock of the '90s.
