| | Little Walter His Best CD (1997)
Doctor Jazz CD music
$8.15 Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica.
With the help of such Chicago heavy-hitters as pianist Otis Spann, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Fred Below, Walter's own group displayed ferocious chemistry and instrumental prowess. Naturally, Walter's vocals and exceptional harp are at the fore here. Whether on signature tunes ("Juke"), slow burners ("Mean Old World"), or classic rockers ("Boom, Boom Out Goes the Light"), this is old-school electric blues at its absolute finest. In addition to its status as a textbook for harmonica ...
| | Tommy Castro Hard Believer CD (2009)
Doctor Jazz music CDs
$14.25 Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator
You might think that Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator--and twelfth overall --would mark a departure for this longtime rocking soulman. But despite a fuller sound, fleshed out with Lenny Castro's percussion and boosted by an ever-present horn section led by longtime cohort Keith Crossan, this is another typically solid effort from the singer/guitarist. Veteran producer/musician John Porter returns to join Castro's strong, husky vocals--a cross between Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and Bob Seger--to a rather slick, radio-friendly approach. It's a marked change from Castro's anything-goes concerts where the songs are tightly rehearsed, yet open for improvisation. Still, when the singer dives into the slow blues of "Backup Plan," all the pieces fit, and Castro's John Fogerty-styled vocals rip into the tune with the kind of aggression generally missing from the musical backing. Covers of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and the Righteous Brothers' rollicking "My Babe" bring out the inherent Memphis R&B grease of the former and the churchy fun of the latter without messing with the ...

| | Fats Domino Greatest Hits: Walking To New Orleans CD (2007)
Doctor Jazz album
$11.39 Following Capitol/EMI's last Fats Domino CD compilation (Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits the Way You Originally Heard Them) by five years, 2007's Greatest Hits: Walking to New Orleans betters that comp in terms of sheer numbers (as it does 1990s My Blue Heaven) by ten tracks and this is a case when more is indeed more. Ten tracks is enough to offer depth, particularly in his earliest sides but also with a couple lesser-known hits from his rock & roll prime, turning this into a joyous overview of one of the greatest musicians of the '50s. It's nice to have this hit the pre-rock & roll and R&B a bit harder -- "Ain't That a Shame" doesn't roll around 'til track six, then it's another ten before "Blueberry Hill" kicks off the string of crossovers -- because it illustrates how hard this rocker, who often gets pigeonholed as merely a genial piano player, really rocked. And though he cut other great material during his Imperial ...
| | J J Cale Troubadour CD (1976)
Doctor Jazz CD music
$8.15 TROUBADOUR is J.J. Cale's fourth album, and was released in 1976. It was on this album that the song "Cocaine" (later a hit for Eric Clapton) made its first appearance. Over the course of his first few albums, Cale clearly delineated who he was as a writer, singer, and guitarist. TROUBADOR continues that careful delineation.
The set's second number, "Travelin' Light," is a perfect introduction to J.J. Cale's craft. It's powered by a groove at once relentless and laid back. There are surprises throughout, including "Ride Me High," which is a deceptively complicated song that undulates as it rolls along. The album's one cover is "I'm a Gypsy Man" by Sonny Curtis. As always, the cover fits Cale like a pair of comfortable old sneakers.

| | Ron Carter Milestone Jazzstars In Concert CD (1978)
Doctor Jazz music CDs
$9.89 Recorded during the Milestone Jazzstars Fall 1978 American tour. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.
This is a jazz fanatic's dream come true--a supergroup consisting of Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and Ron Carter (with Al Foster on drums). This disc, culled from the best performances of the Jazzstars 1978 American Tour, features almost 75 minutes of superior, cutting-edge improvisatory jazz. One of the most appealing things about this release is its variety. It moves from the full-steam quartet ("The Cutting Edge," "Nubia" and "N.O. Blues") to duets (Tyner and Carter on "Alone Together;" Rollins and Tyner on "In A Sentimental Mood") and solo spots (Rollins imaginative inventions in "Continuum" and Tyner's gorgeous keyboard work on "A Little Pianissimo").
Tyner's years with Coltrane serve him in excellent stead as he becomes the glue which holds this loosely-knit yet perfectly calibrated group together. His combination of free-flowing ideas and beautiful skeleton structures are matched by the sinuous bass lines of Carter. Rollins, coming off of several decades playing beside the greats and heading his own ensembles, is in fine form too, casting about between furious, speedy soloing, traditional tone-rich melody lines ...
