TIM LAWSONTim Lawson may have entitled one of his albums The Quiet Canadian, but this Canadian renaissance man has been making a highly effective noise both inside and outside the world of music.Lawson is a singer, songwriter, publishing entrepreneur and humanitarian of rare talent and vision. His work in all these fields has won him international acclaim over the past five years. Tim embarked on a career in music at the age of 38, and his previous life experiences help account for the maturity of his material.Once fully committed to his art, Lawson wasted no time in compiling a highly impressive body of work. That now stands at six albums: 1997's stellar debut The Quiet Canadian, The Right Way On (1999), Lest We Forget (2000), 2002's Please No Talking and Lest We Forget II with six new songs, and the latest CD released under the band name "The Tim Lawson Band" in 2004 So Many Stories.He shines as both a singer and a storyteller, and his warm, rich vocals prove the ideal medium for the delivery of his melodic songs and humanitarian message. Tim cites musical inspirations ranging from the Beatles (their originality spurred him into picking up his first guitar at age ten) to James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot. Lawson's eclectic approach to music means that his sound happily defies easy definition.One creative constant, however, is the consistent excellence of his backing musicians. He has recruited some of the best players on the West Coast, and the fact that the same crew has stayed with Tim through all his recordings testifies to their dedication to his work. Anne Pringle and Mark Burnell might invite dirty-minded jibes with the CD title Little Things We Do Together, but such is the nature of self-produced recordings, assembled with loving care by artists who probably have better things to do but have been spurred on by the illusion of a softcore marketplace. Pringle and Burnell are a cabaret duo -- her singing, him playing piano accompaniment -- so the little things they do together would have to be sexed up considerably in order to attract major-label attention. After all, MGM Records didn't even want Sammy Davis, Jr. to record standards, and that was in the '60s. Pringle produced this album in 2000, and she also designed the cover and is credited with taking pictures of everyone else involved but herself. This includes guest vocalist Buddy Charles and the eerie violinist Johnny Frigo, both legends on the Chicago jazz scene. That the duo would attract such collaborators in their home base is surely not about anyone throwing money around. Pringle and Burnell are superb musicians. While there is probably such a vocal and piano duo in every town, this one begs to be pushed ahead of the pack if only for crafty repertoire choices. George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Hoagy Carmichael are required fare. Pringle's performances more than satisfy the basic requirements, notably in her and the pianist's sense of atmosphere. Covers of songs by Tom Lehrer and Dave Frishberg are wise, wise choices, as the work of these humorist composers deserves to be placed side by side with the heavyweights of Tin Pan Alley and is underperformed to boot.
