| | Nas Illmatic CD (1994)
Hip Hop IV: The Collection CD music
$6.09 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own.
Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., DJ Premier and The Large Professor, but it is Nas's unique rhythmic cadences, his idiomatic sense of on-the-street wordplay, his disrespect for the high time and the empty rhyme that distinguishes ILLMATIC. When Nas rocks the mic, it's not a hedonist's wet dream, but a depiction of urban hope and despair, and thanks to Nas's poetic insights, he soon transports you there (in a manner seldom seen in black pop since the days of Stevie's INNERVISIONS and Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOIN' ON?).
Landmark 1994 debut from Queensbridge rapper mixed dope beats with elevated, poetic, but ...
| | Isaac Hayes Hot Buttered Soul CD (1969) Bonus Tracks; Anniversary Edition; Remastered
Hip Hop IV: The Collection music CDs
$9.65 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
A staff songwriter with the legendary Stax label, Isaac Hayes, with partner David Porter, composed material for many of the company's artists, including Sam And Dave, Carla Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. Frustrated with this backroom role, he began recording in his own right, and with Hot Buttered Soul, redefined the notion of soul music. Although the tracks were lengthy, there was no sense of self-indulgence, each one evolving over sensual rhythms and taut arrangements. Hayes' vocal anticipated the 'rap' genre of Barry White and Millie Jackson without slipping into self-parody, lending ...

| | Twista Category F5 CD (2009)
Hip Hop IV: The Collection album
$11.39 A half-decade after breaking through to the mass public as a cagey veteran with the smash "Slow Jams," the "world's fastest rapper" continues to consistently drop some of the most downright interesting records in the hip-hop universe. 2009's CATEGORY F5 is quite possibly Twista's tightest record to date. The album is both a whirlwind of language and a bloodletting, a reminder that the rapid-fire rapper possesses one of the most keen (and often underrated) wits in the game as well as one of its darkest minds. Twista is of the streets, but his task is not to extol the glory of the game, but to impassively chronicle the carnage through the 3-D glasses of his own messed-up mind. There's a born-into-it undercurrent to his narrative, his super-speedy flow acting as a subliminal machine ...

| | Music From The Motion Picture: The Heartbreak Kid CD (2007) Original Soundtrack
Hip Hop IV: The Collection album
$12.49 Ben Stiller's movie roles are rarely serious, so perhaps it's appropriate that the soundtracks to his comedies are similarly silly. The Heartbreak Kid marks Stiller's first collaboration with the Farrelly brothers since 1998's There's Something About Mary, whose accompanying soundtrack mixed enduring pop classics with such modern-day torchbearers as the Dandy Warhols. Stiller's new soundtrack follows suit, with a pair of celebrated David Bowie songs ("Suffragette City" and "Ashes to Ashes") laying the foundation for contributions from Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs ("Different Drum," from the duo's stellar covers album in 2006), John Alagia (who, as a producer, has helmed most projects by the Dave Matthews Band), and folk duo the Weepies. Most of the album's inspired material has already been released elsewhere, ...
