Seawards album
$13.75 The methodology went like this: former Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk frontman Mike Patton sends hip-hopping turntable masters the X-Ecutioners a bunch of oddball records, then the X-Ecutioners create "sound blocks" out of the albums and send them back to Patton for final tweaking and song-building. Two years in the making, the collaboration feels more like a Patton project than an equal-footing outing, but that doesn't narrow the sound down much, does it? On one hand, there's Patton's penchant for the aggressively avant-garde. On the other, there's his not-as-wild-as-you'd-think appearance on Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People. Ridiculously long and cryptic song titles might point to a crazed, "out there" experience, but General Patton vs. the X-Ecutioners is surprisingly crisp and funky over half of the time, and it's a good guess the X-Ecutioners ...

| | Ulcerate Everything Is Fire CD (2009)
Seawards album
$12.49 New Zealand's pretty small, so it's no surprise that its metal scene is proportionately intimate. That being said, Ulcerate are competitive with the best bands from anywhere on the globe. Viva globalism! Their music combines the brutal, downtuned riffing of traditional death metal (think Immolation or Morbid Angel) with the dissonance and shifting time signatures of Gorguts and the slow, atmospheric passages reminiscent of Isis. None of the eight songs are less than five minutes long, and the album-closing title track nearly hits the eight-minute mark. The track titles, ...

| | Janet Bean Dragging Wonder Lake CD (2003)
Seawards album
$13.05 Janet Bean And The Concertina Wire: Janet Bean (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Jon Speigel (acoustic guitar, steel guitar, petal-steel guitar); Douglas McCombs (guitar); Fred Lonberg-Holm (cornet, cello, Nyckelharpa); Jim Baker (piano, electric piano, synthesizer); John Abbey (bass); Dan Leali (drums); Kelly Hogan (background vocals).
After 17 years in the music business, Janet Bean's debut album, Dragging Wonder Lake, is something of a revelation. Although she shared vocal and songwriting duties with her other two bands (Eleventh Dream Day and Freakwater), Dragging Wonder Lake showcases Bean's talents in a very different context and in full bloom in a way that may surprise people familiar with her other work. This album is musically a continuation of the "cosmic American music" pioneered by Gram Parsons and carried on by his protégée, Emmylou Harris; it's a sprawling amalgam of country and rock, with warm, organic production courtesy of John McEntire. There's weepy pedal steel on a few tracks, and the lap steel playing of John Spiegel strongly recalls David Lindley's work with Jackson Browne at times. Bandmembers Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello) and Jim Baker (piano) are best-known for their presence in the Chicago improv community, but prove here that they are more than capable of working in this idiom, as well as adding the odd touches that help ensure that this is no retro homage. Just check out the piano solo on Neil Young's "Soldier" or the cello breaks on "One Shot" and "Spout of Spite."
Bean explores themes of loss and resignation throughout the ...
| | Pillows Penalty Life CD (2003) Import
Seawards CD music
$37.25 Penalty Life starts with one of the best alt rock tracks there is -- a simple, clever number with the dynamic James Bond-themed rhythm section and deceptively effective college boy vocals. It's definitely justified to say that this song ("Dead Stock Paradise") sums up all the best there is about the Pillows (no capital in the official spelling) and their Pixies-inspired brand of rock that shows it's possible to stick firmly to the alternative side of music and still be fit for charts, radio, and movie credits. However, it's also a success that's too hard to replicate, at least along the course of one album, and so the expectations set by the first song will probably be brought down a bit by the end of Penalty Life. Which is a shame, really, as there are plenty of other strong tracks on the record ...
