| | Eric Dolphy Music Matador CD Eric Dolphy Discography of CDs
In the spring of 1963, in the last full year of his life, Eric Dolphy recorded nine tracks in New York with producer Alan Douglas. Working with an ensemble that was mixed and matched in different configurations and included Prince Lasha on flute, Clifford Jordan on soprano sax, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Huey Simmons on alto sax, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone (there was no pianist at the sessions), bassists Richard Davis and Eddie Kahn, and drummers J.C. Moses and Charles Moffett, Dolphy tracked material that clearly anticipated his landmark Out to Lunch album that appeared in 1964 while still providing a bridge to the more traditionally accessible work that preceded it. Dolphy delivered some of the best and most striking work of his career, whether offering full-band treatments of originals like "Iron Man" and "Burning Spear"; giving a loose and lilting calypso feel to "Music Matador"; turning Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" upside down and sideways; or playing wonderful lines on flute, bass clarinet, and alto saxophone. The sessions were split up and originally issued as a pair of LPs, Conversations and Iron Man, and have been reissued in different configurations and under different titles many times since. The complete sessions are available on CD as the double-disc Dolphy Sound from Jazz World, and that's ultimately the way to go, although this set holds up quite well as a sequence. The bottom line is that no Dolphy fan should be without the material recorded at these 1963 New York sessions. The music is brilliant no matter whether it's presented in part or in whole, but once you hear it, you'll want it all. ~ Steve Leggett

Music Matador CD music
$9.99 By late 1966, it seemed as if every TV commercial and every pop arranger had latched onto the Herb Alpert "Ameriachi" sound -- at which point the resourceful originator of that sound began to pare it down and loosen it up a bit. S.R.O. (Standing Room Only), referring to the Tijuana Brass' string of sold-out concerts, is an accurate title, for this LP is about a seven-piece band loaded with experienced jazzers who groove and swing together to a greater degree than on their previous albums. Sure, the arrangements are very tightly knit and don't allow much room for spontaneity, but they still sound fresh and uninhibited, and Alpert often allows the flavor of jazz to come through more clearly. Indeed, two of the album's three hit singles, "The Work Song" and "Flamingo," are jazz tunes -- the former nervous and driving, the latter joyously kicking -- and the third, "Mame," gets a nifty Dixieland treatment a la Louis Armstrong, with Alpert singing one verse. Music Matador music CDs
$10.15 John L Zainer! In 1938, at the age of four, two events happened which will help explain the cover. I had my first ride on a motorcycle, a 1938 Harley. This was also the first year I started taking music lessons. I started with the accordion and then added piano the following year. I'm still riding motorcycles, playing the piano, and occasionally the accordion. After studying piano for fifteen years I was drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon arriving in Germany in 1955 I met some jazz musicians and at that time started to improvise and listen to the well-known jazz musicians of the time. During the course of the next five years I discovered and started to enjoy the talents of Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver, Bud Powell, and Bill Evans. Currently my two favorite jazz pianists are Walter Norris and Kenny Barron. In addition to jazz, I enjoy playing the Bach preludes and fugues and from one of them came the idea for the improvisation of the Bach Fugue XXIV-Vol II. The rest of the songs are among my favorite jazz standards. By the way, the cover photo was taken in 1960 on a street in Los Angeles aboard a 1951 Norton. The Harley on the back is with my Slovenian Grandmother and older Brother Don. Oh, and that sexy woman by the window is my dear wife of 44 years!which explains the title 'Song for Ille-Heid'.
