| | Journey: The Very Best Of Donna Summer CD (2006) Bonus CD
So Underground It Hurts
$12.25 Initial pressings of THE JOURNEY included a bonus CD featuring 12" remixes.
As one of the few performers from the disco era to have a career beyond one-hit wonder status, Donna Summer has continued forward on her creative path well into the 1990s, necessitating the release of the two-disc THE JOURNEY: THE VERY BEST OF DONNA SUMMER. Summer neophytes will get their share of this diva's classic ...

| | Empire Of The Sun Walking On A Dream CD (2008)
So Underground It Hurts
$10.75 WALKING ON A DREAM is the debut album by Empire of the Sun, the Australian duo that includes Luke Steele of pop-rockers the Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of dance/electronica ensemble Pnau. Together they find a common ground between their stylistically disparate backgrounds, turning out tracks that incorporate both the psych-tinged pop sensibilities of Steele's previous recordings with the ...
| | Tiesto Kaleidoscope CD (2009)
So Underground It Hurts
$15.05 Fans of Tiesto's progressive-flavored trance anthems of the early-`00s were already well versed on the DJ-turned-producer's fondness for ethereal, siren-like vocals and epic-sized productions (best illustrated on female-fronted remixes featuring the likes of Sarah McLaughlan, Sixpence None the Richer, and Faithless). But, despite the relative pop leanings of such past collaborations, Tiesto never enjoyed major success beyond the club circuit. KALEIDOSCOPE, the producer's 2009 album, not only has its sights set on a more mainstream pop/rock appeal but--with guests spots from Bloc Party's ...
| | Midival Punditz Hello Hello CD (2009) Digipak
So Underground It Hurts
$13.59 Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj make electronica of unusual wit and flexibility, and they do so in ways that draw deeply on their Indian heritage without invoking the kind of fake spirituality that flatters Western listeners who believe that enjoying South Asian inflections is a sign of their own depth. Anyone who approaches Hello Hello with that attitude will be nicely brought up short by the cheesy vocoder on "Electric Universe" and by the way the duo ...
| | Respect To Studio One CDs (1994)
So Underground It Hurts
$20.39 Studio One was to Jamaican music a combination of Motown and Stax-Volt, creating hit after hit, stretching the nascent sound of the island further. Studio One helped spearhead the Ska revolution in the 60's, later moved forward into reggae, eventually laying the groundwork for Dancehall. This means much of today's reggae, from Terror Fabulous to Dawn Penn, is an extension of what began over 35 years ago. Founder Clement "Coxsone" Dodd was reggae's Phil Spector, its Berry Gordy and its Dick Clark all wrapped into one; he provided the studio, musicians to record with, chose the material, co-wrote it, and then brought it to the public at his sound system dances. He was in control of every aspect of making a hit record from beginning to end.
RESPECT TO STUDIO ONE is a good introduction to the Studio One legend, but is only the tip of the iceberg. The set strikes a balance between the different styles found in Jamaican music, touching on moments ...
| | Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime CDs (1988) Bonus Tracks
So Underground It Hurts
$20.55 The album that preceded this release, RAGE FOR ORDER, came as a surprise to some fans because of the group's appropriation of electronic sound-generating techniques. Undeterred, the band composed its most challenging work yet, the epic concept album OPERATION: MINDCRIME. Originally issued in 1988, the hard-edged album slowly worked its way up the charts and became the band's first gold-certified release (an opening slot on Def Leppard's sold-out HYSTERIA tour certainly didn't hurt, either). The story-line centers on a drug addict who falls in love with a former prostitute turned nun. Together, they uncover a dangerous underground movement and try to stop it before it's too late.
How do you make a bona fide classic better? EMI certainly has an idea. There was no way they could let Rhino steal the glory -- and the money -- with their fine issue of Operation: Mindcrime II. That recording had all the elements that made the original great -- using '80s studio technology to create a seamless sequel to the original. EMI has hustled out (a mere three months later) two editions of the original Operation: Mindcrime. This double-disc package offers a remastered edition of the original with pair of live bonus tracks, one recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon (on the 15th of December 1990) and one from London's Astoria in 1994, along with a bonus disc of the entire album performed live at the Hammersmith on December 14, 1990. While the bonus cuts on disc one are essentially throwaways -- and were already issued on CD previously -- the live disc is not, and features a stellar performance by Queensr˙che, inspired and on fire. ~ Thom Jurek
